Eugene Nettles Obituary

NETTLES Eugene Nettles, 70, was a Jacksonville native living his entire life on the Southside. Gene lived a life full of family, friends, and fun. He loved laughter with all, and lived with the spirit of a child full of curiosity, adventure and fearlessness. Always living his way he was unconditionally loved and adored by his wife Evon of 45 years, just as he gave the same love in return. He loved doting on his children and grandchildren all who meant the world to him. Gene was a long time car and racing enthusiast maintaining relationships with the River City Street Rod Club, The Cushman Club of America, The National Street Rod Association, The Jax Raceway Hall of Fame Club, and a lifetime friend of many other Florida car clubs. He is survived and will be missed by his wife and life partner Evon; his children, Chip (Toni), Dale (Karen), Gary (Dee), Scott/Zack (Michael), Missi (Ingo); his grandchildren, Nikki (Laramie), Holley (Andy), Alicia (Dominick), Ashley (JR), Taylor, Shelby, Douglas, Robert, Michael, Heather, Knicolas; great grandchildren, Laramie Jr., Kyle, Gabby, Azalya, Rayen, Kaiden; and a long list of other family members, tattoo buddies, Dupont Class of '57 Alumni, and many friends. A procession will begin at Oaklawn Cemetery & Funeral Home on San Jose Blvd. Saturday at 12:45pm and will end at the Arlington Park Cemetery on Lone Star Road where there will be a "casual" graveside service at 1:45pm. The family will receive visitors beginning at 3:00pm at the Secret Garden CafŽ on Beach Blvd. were there will be a covered dish memorial. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you take a moment today and tell someone how much you love them. OAKLAWN CEMETERY & FUNERAL HOME, 4801 San Jose Blvd. is serving the family. To Evon & Family; So sorry to hear of your lost. I just found out this past Sunday after talking with Scott at the restaurant. I ALWAYS enjoyed my time spent with Gene at the house and when we would run into each other at the car shows. It was so relaxing to talk for hours about cars, model cars & motorcycle related items with Gene at the house and oh the stories he would tell. We even traded cars years ago. I had a Ford Escort GT & Gene had a 54 Chevy.
Sorry I couldn't be there in your time of need. Take Care and God Bless.

Mom,

It took me a while to be able to come on here and leave a note for this guest book. I felt I finally had been able to process where I was in my grief, how much I missed dad, and where he would want me to go from here. Where do I start? I had the wonderful pleasure of having Gene Nettles (your husband) as my father for a little over 44 years. I want you to know that I was ALWAYS and am still so proud to consider him my father, and how happy I was that he and I became such close friends. You seemed to always be around when I would visit over the last 20 of those years, but he and I had many a conversation between one another.

These conversations always somehow ended with talks about our family and the choices we each have made. He was amazing. If I was having a problem with someone else in the family he would never plainly just take the side of any of us, but remain neutral and try to explain where the other may have been coming from. Most of the time this was not what I wanted to hear, but in retrospect I understand that he loved each of us so much that he couldn’t bear to see us at odds with one another. He always wanted this big family because he knew (as do you) how lonely it was being an only child. I don’t think I ever had a conversation with him when he didn’t take the high road. The last several months he spent time telling me just how proud he was - and how much he loved not just me, but all of us; You, Chip, Dale, Gary and Michelle.

I realize a day didn't go by when he did not tell you just how much he loved you, but it was always so nice to hear him say it to me when you were not around. He made it VERY clear to all of us just how much he loved you and that you had his heart from the day you met. Your love together was truly incredible and It could easily be seen that the two of you were (and are) definitely soul mates. You both taught me to think wisely, be forgiving, and most importantly to love unconditionally.

Reflecting on my life I could not wish it to be any different. I am happy with my choices and the support that I received from him (and you) for each and every one. Dad truly was my hero. Through any obstacle he was constant in his love, support and protection of all of us. Even though we had big shoes to fill and at times there was tension; I want you to know that I get it now. I understand now that during all of those years he was only trying to teach us things trying to help us have an easier life. A life where we could avoid some of the pitfalls that were lying ahead.

I think dad would want to ALWAYS be remembered, but would want each of us to move forward continuing to make him so proud. I want you to move forward knowing that you have ALL OF OUR love and support, and the wonderful memories of true love with a man that was bigger than life. I have no doubt that your love for one another surely will transcend this life where he is patiently waiting until you reach the time that you meet again. I love you with all of my heart.

To Evon and all my cousins, I just read through most of the comments. I have ended up sitting here crying again. Gene, my only cousin on mom's side of the family, helped raise me since he was five years older than I. He cannot be replaced as a cousin and from what I have read here, cannot be replaced as a friend for many. He was a unique individual. I have so many happy memories of him and will miss his wonderful tales of our childhood. Love, Bonnie (Gene's Aunt Weez's daughter)

I can truly say, Gene was loved by everyong and he will be greatly missed.

...Saturday as I turned the corner, off of Arlington Road, the procession stopped...the radio paused...thought my truck stalled....all of a sudden, "Free Bird" started....it was the long version....I .."CRANKED IT UP"....people were staring....the instrumental started ...I ..."CRANKED IT UP AGAIN"....it played all the way up to the the lane, the hearse was parked on...they slowed me down and stopped me to move traffic to the next lane and it came to an end...........I got out of the truck with chill-bumps all over my arms......could not help but look up and smile, I felt like he was telling me he was free of the pain now.....I told Chip and he just gave me a big smile.......Now that was priceless.......!
Hope Henry Ford doesn't have any Model T's up there..................It will be a T-buckets soon.....

September 21, 2009

To The Nettles Family,

Let me start in the beginning 31 years ago. I was a teenager and I meet Chip. Then I met his family. WOW! I never had a family like this, my Dad got killed when I was five and it was just my Mom and I (my brother was in the Army). So Dad became my Dad too! He taught all about cars and all kind of things. We were at the PeanutButter Hole and I was in my first rolling submarine as he sped acrossing water. We had the best Thanksgivings with Grama, my Mom, and the Tacketts. Then we went on Mr Toad's Wild Ride when I was about to have Nikki (the Hospital was NAS)and we got stopped by the police. And these were just a few of the adventure we shared. Dad and Mom did outstanding job rising five children, I am proud to say they are my husband, my brothers and sister. We have all came along way down hill and up mountains and I going to miss my Dad. He loved my kids and grand kids they adored him.
The last time I talked to Dad, he said he couldn't wait for us to cruz our Fords together. How I wish that could of happened. But now I know he's shining the Best Hot Rod Ever. I Love You! Dad and I will think of you Always, Toni

I had the honor of knowing Gene since Grammer school. He was the kind of person you knew would be there for you if you needed him. He was a great "Young" man that grew into a greater Man, met and married Evon and his world was complete. He loved her dearly. He has a wonderful family that will surely miss him greatly. I know that anyone who had the privilege of knowing Gene knows that he was one of a kind, loved life, being happy and making something new out of something old, his cars was one of his passions. My deepest sympathy goes to his family. He will be missed by all.

My heartfelt sorrow goes to everyone of the family. I remember Evon telling me how Gene was her "Soulmate". I told him how him and his wife were so lucky to have that for each other. He told me he felt the same for her. Gene was my neighbor for 9 years. I was always able to go to him for anything. Mostly when I was feeling down I would call him or visit him. No matter what he was going through at the time, he would always cheer me up. I always felt safe knowing that he was next door. I knew he would take care of any intruders to our home (if you know what I mean). I loved it when he was in his garage and showed me all his collection of cars, engines, toys...you name it. It was so much fun looking at everything he collected over the years and the stories he had about them. He always made me laugh. What a wonderful sense of humor the man had. I remember one day, he and a friend of his were racing their electric chairs down the road. I couldn't believe that. It was so hilarious. He would always keep me laughing. It really just hit me that he is gone. I always knew that when I drove by his house he would be there looking and when I drove by it yesterday, it felt strange knowing he wasn't there. My family and I will miss him tremendously. He will always be in our hearts. I'll miss him on the days in the backyard when I would hear him with his grandchildren and calling to me "hey Robin, come here, look at what we did, or what we just got". He would even make me laugh when he was in the hospital on the phone telling jokes. He was some guy!!!! I know he is up in Heaven making everybody laugh with his stories and probably playing the steel guitar and mandolin for them. I will always feel his presence when I drive by his house everyday. I know he is still looking at us, but with a MUCH better view.

After receiving news of Gene's passing Tim and I sat for a long time remembering all those good times we had.Gene was without a doubt one of the most genuine people God placed on this earth. He truly left an impact on all he came in touch with.A giant of a man who had a heart to match.I have nerver in the 38 yrs of friendship heard him express anything but good about another person. "They're real nice people or Hey,You'll like him/her." That was the extent of Gene's negative comments.I know that he is in a wonderful place with loved ones and friends.Heaven is so beautiful and peaceful.I can imagine Gene with his boyish grin Saying to us,Hey,don't be sad for me be glad and always remember I love you. ... our love and prayers to all, Timmy and Patti "poo" Bristol

My sincere condolences to the entire Nettles family. I have known Gene most of my life. As a little girl in the neighborhood I used to hear him in one of his hot rods coming down the street and I would run outside to see which one he was driving. I remember on rainy days after school being picked in a hot rod so Zack and I didn't have to walk home in the rain. As an adult I moved down the street from the Nettles again. This time even closer. Still running outside when I would hear his cars. I think Gene was the kindest, friendliest and most caring man that I have ever met in my life. He always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. I am so glad that my girls got to meet him. When my daughter Dani took up running, the only place she was allowed to run was from our driveway to the Nettles. I knew that Gene was always watching to make sure she was safe and would call me if she went farther down the street. I love you Gene and will miss you bunches!!!

He was always working on another car,be it a Drag Car,Race Car, Street Rod Motorcycle or Cushman Scooter if it had a motor Gene would work on it.
I am saddened that I won't see him at any more car shows, but one day I will see him at that big car show in the sky.

Words cannot express the loss and saddness we feel.
Gene was a friend for almost 40 years. I have a lot of fond memories of him and his family traveling with me and my family to rod runs. One time on our way to Memphis, Gene was leading the way and in front of him was a pickup truck loaded with tomatoes. I'm not sure why, but those tomatoes started falling off the truck and hitting his car. After Gene got over the initial shock and "anger" we all had a good laugh. Also, I'll never forget the time he and I entered a dance contest at a local restaurant and came in 2nd place dancing to Rock Around The Clock!
He was blessed with a very loving wife and family which he often bragged about.
He will be greatly missed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
God Bless and comfort you.

My life will never be the same without my daddy by my side... I am going to miss the safety and security of his hands holding me as I stumble through life and then carrying me when I needed him most. I always knew that if nothing else went right in life daddy would always make sure he would make it right... I am going to miss my daddy more then words can ever express... Not hearing him say "Hey Baby" every time I walk in the room is devastating... But I know when I leave this world he will be waiting for me... "Hey Baby" Daddy I Love you so much and I am going to miss you terribly until we are together again!

Gene always had a kind word for me and we talked cars for hours on end...we love to talk...lol....we loved cars and motorcycles. Gene gave me the inspiration to take up custom metalwork on cars and bikes....his honest appraisal of my work and the encouragement to be a little better than the rest and to never feel that I would ever stop learning, made me what I am.
When I was told recently that he had been sick , I wanted to go see him and with great sadness I was not able to do that. I have lost 5 friends in as many weeks and I am with heavy heart.
Chip , I pray for you and your family. Hope you know what your father meant to me. He was a good man and loved by all that knew him.
Gene, old friend, knowing that you will be looking down on my efforts, I will strive to make you proud. Thank you for being my friend,.....I will miss you!!!!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Nettles' family in their time of grief. "To be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord."
One of my best memories(1949)was of me and "little Gene" as he was called then, sitting on our back porch on Cruz Road..known as Center Street back in the day, feeding Fluffy, Gene's big white dog out of our cereal bowl. My mom (Aunt Lucy) and his mom, my Aunt Edna, would scold us every time, but it never stopped us. Fluffy really liked cereal. God Bless you all.

To Evon (Boo Boo), and family. This is so sad. Gene was one of the greatest and most unforgettable characters I've ever met. What a great mind he had. Extremely smart, crafty, and very articulate. He had more friends than you could imagine, and was known to many throughout the United States. You just had to love him from the moment you met him. He never spoke negative about anyone. He loved his family so dearly. You would have to answer to a giant of a man if you crossed his kids. He treated his friends the same way too. He was such a caring and giving person. What a great loss to the Southside of Jacksonville, and the nation for that matter. Gene was a popular person and there will be a great void in the Hot Rodding venues throughout the Southeastern US. He was THE "Go To Guy" to people seeking advice in all levels of anything related to Custom Rodding or drag raging. Darn, I hate to see him leave us, but I'm sure he is busy building his best Hot Rod of all time... in Heaven

My condolences to the entire Nettles family. In the short time I knew Gene it felt like we would have been friends a long time had we met sooner. We both liked racing of all sorts, especially cars and slot cars. I enjoyed many days of his company at the Slot car track talking, telling stories and even racing.
