HARRY COLLINS Jr.

COLLINS Dr. Harry Lee Collins, Jr., 89, of Jacksonville, passed away August 6th. Born January 9th, 1922 in Umatilla, Florida to Harry and Lucy Collins, he graduated from the University of Florida in 1943 with honors. Following graduation he earned a Medical Degree from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Dr. Collins then served in the US Army Corp where he obtained the rank of Captain before being honorably discharged and beginning a brief private practice in Umatilla. He began practicing orthopedics in Jacksonville in 1956 after completing residency programs in Memphis, Tennessee and Louisville, Kentucky. He was active in the medical community serving terms as the president of the Jacksonville Orthopedic Society and as Head of Orthopedics at Memorial Hospital He was a member of Timuquana Country Club and the International Safari Club. His true joy in life was the outdoors; hunting, fishing and photography. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert L. Collins, and three sisters Carolyn Bassett, Virginia Bryan, and Mary Marshall. Survivors include his sons Harry L. Collins III, John D. Collins, Jeffery H. Collins (Susannah); daughters Karen Thomas (Peter), Susan Berg, Amy Collins, Catherine Oshin (Leo), Caroline Collins (Jirka Fomin); grandchildren Challen Berg, Davis C. Berg (Coventry) Peter R. Thomas, Jr., Gentry Collins, Finley Collins, Effie Collins, and Jeffery H. (Harris) Collins, Jr.. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday August 13th at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Jacksonville. Later, at his request, a private ceremony will be held in Umatilla to inter his ashes to the lake he fished and swam in as a boy.
