Rita & family,

I am so sorry Herbie has left us. God be with you all. Our family moved to Southside in Jax in 1967 & my kids grew up knowing & hanging with everyone in the area, including Herbie. He remained a good friend to Beverly, Sharon, Mike & Pam throughout all these years. I would go to the Neighborhood when Mike’s band played there & Herbie never failed to come greet me & send me drink. He always made me feel "at home". He was a gentle, good-hearted, man with many, many friends & will truly be missed.

I had not seen Herbie in several years, the last time being in 1988 at Andy's Sandwich Shoppe in Southpoint. I used to see him a lot in the late 1970s when I was a pinball operator and did business with his parents at Eli Ross Distributors. I even worked there briefly. It was a shock to see his name in the obits since he was only three years older than me. I would love to know what happened to him, if someone will be so kind as to contact me and tell me. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

To Rita and all others in Herbie's circle of family and friends, Rita, I am so very sorry to hear that you have lost your Herbie. Herbie was a very special person with a heart bigger than I can describe. Back when I lost Dave in 1996 Herbie went out of his way to always make me feel welcome and genuinely happy to see me when I came to the Neighborhood. I will never forget his generous heart. My heart goes out to you, Rita, and all who had to good fortune in their lives to have Herbie as a family member and friend. He will truly be missed.

We want to extend our deepest sympathies to Herbie's family. When we moved to JAX in 2005 and went on our first poker run through the Neighborhood Tavern, Herbie made a point of getting to know us. We instantly found a common thread in having spent our childhood years in Savannah GA and remained friends from that day forward. RIP Herbie. Ride free of pain with the Angels.

Dear Rita and Shawn,

It is hard to believe I've lived here 20 plus years now. Time has passed so quickly it reminds us that all our lives are short and precious. I want you to know that I could not have better friends and neighbors than the Gorman Family.

Herb will be greatly missed by me and my family. From the first week I lived here in 1989, you and Herb made me feel welcome and I knew then that I picked the RIGHT place to make my home. I always knew that during my time in the Navy overseas that I did not have to worry about my family or home because Herbie told me he would keep an eye on things all the times I was away.

I will always remember Herb fondly and with great respect. I feel like I have lost a big brother rather than a neighbor. Herb was a trusted and valued friend. A life too short, but a life well lived.

The Clarke family wishes you peace and our condolences for your loss. We are here for you if you are ever in need, as I know Herbie and the Gormans would be for us.

May God bless and comfort you during this difficult time.

With love and friendship,

Brad Smith

I met Herbie in July 2005, when I walked into the Neighborhood Tavern for the first time. He saw that I was new there, introduced himself, made me welcome and never forgot my name. Everyone was Herbie's friend, no one was a stranger.
I will miss you, as everyone who knew you will also.
I will always cherish those times when we sat out back for hours just shooting the breeze and passing the time.
My love and prayers to Rita and the family,
Brad

Although our family left Jacksonville 35 years ago, Herbie and his family remained in our hearts. His father and mine worked together for many years and I have such wonderful memories of our family time with them. While visiting Jacksonville a few years ago, I was able to locate Herbie and had a wonderful visit with him.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
