Imogene Newman Obituary

Mrs. Imogene Kelley Newman, 94, formerly of Jacksonville, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, August 23, 2009 in Cumming Georgia. Mrs. Newman was born in Helena, Georgia the daughter of the late Caleb Lindsey and Rosa Lee (Hatcher) Kelley. She was a member of Franklin Street Baptist Church, taught clerical skills at Jones College and was a Women's Champion Golfer at Pine Lakes Golf Club. A Professional Musician performing on the piano and organ, she taught music for more than 65 years and served at a number of churches, also playing for numerous weddings and funerals. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Samuel H. Newman, Sr. in 1996, who was superintendent of the Kennedy Light Plant (JEA); a daughter: Barbara Gene Newman; her brothers: Dole, John and C.L. Kelley, Jr. and a sister: Justeen Kemp. She is survived by her son, Dr. (Rev.) Samuel H. (Angie) Newman, Jr.; 4 grandchildren: Sam Newman III, Robin Pickle, Rhonda Davidson and Julie N. Fortner; 2 step granddaughters: Kimberly Whorton and Laura Klein; 11 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; 1 sister-in-law: Jean Ingle Kelley and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at PEEPLES FAMILY FUNERAL HOMES - North Jacksonville Chapel, 2220 Soutel Drive near Lem Turner Road with Dr. Terry R. Gore and Rev. Louis H. Kennison, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Her family will greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday (TODAY) at the funeral home. Ronnie and I loved your mother and dad so much. She was such a good friend and sweet person,
I will always cherish our friendship with both of them. I missed her so much when she moved to Atlanta, but I did enjoy her calls. I know she is in a better place.

Mrs. Newman was such a lovely lady and sweet as sugar. We enjoyed her so much while she was at Franklin street Baptist Church. I still miss seeing her sitting at the organ and miss her wonderful music.
