Imogene Stumpf Obituary

STUMPF Imogene Jerrie Stumpf, beloved matriarch and friend, died on December 18 in Jacksonville, FL. She was born January 29, 1919 in the border town of Douglas, AZ where her father served as a troop commander with the 17th Cavalry. As an Army daughter, she lived an adventurous young life, moving frequently, far and wide. While attending college in St. Louis, she met and married Army 2nd Lt. Robert Stumpf in 1939. During WWII, Jerrie's husband, father and brother fought in the European theater. Living with her mother, Imogene, in Washington, DC, she completed a bachelors degree at GWU and served as a volunteer aircraft defense spotter. Jerrie, an avid gardener and horticulturalist, served as President of the Garden Club of Ft. Belvoir, VA, President of the Beverly Hills Garden Club of Alexandria, and various chairmanships of the National Capital Area Federation of Garden Clubs from 1972-1990. As a devout lifelong Episcopalian, she was the Superintendent of Sunday School at Carlisle Barracks, PA, served ten years on the vestry of Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill, Alexandria, was Chairman of Women there, a graduate of the 3 year study course, Education for Ministry, and a soprano in the Immanuel choir, performing in England and at Carnegie Hall. Jerrie was the Secretary of the Army Distaff Foundation 1985-90, National Treasurer of the Daughters of the United States Army, and member of the Resident Council of Fleet Landing, Atlantic Beach, FL from 1996-99. She is preceded in death by her parents, Maj. Gen. and Mrs. Donald A. Stroh, her husband, Col. Robert H. Stumpf, USA (ret.), and brother, Maj. Harry R. Stroh, US Army Air Corps. Jerrie leaves with us her sons, Harry, LtCol USA (ret.), Robert, Capt. USN (ret.) and his wife Susan, and Donald; daughter-in-law Brenda; grandchildren Natalie Stumpf Solotoff (Ari), Carolyn Stumpf Wedel (Rock), Kimberly Stumpf Monteleone (Chris), H. Richard Stumpf (Barbara), and Petra Stumpf; and three great grandchildren, with twins on the way. Her memorial Service is at Windward Hall, Fleet Landing, Dec. 22, at 1:30. The burial will be with her husband, and near her brother, at West Point. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Endowment Fund, Fleet Landing (904-246-9900, ext 403), and the Scholarship Fund of the Daughters of the US Army (845-446-0566). My mother and I were just remembering Jerrie today in a telephone conversation. As her next door neighbor for many years, we got to enjoy her lovely gardens and cheery energetic personality. With sympathy, Beth Green

I so enjoyed knowing and singing with Jerri in the ICOH Choir so many years ago. She loved her family and she loved life -- a real inspiration.

My deepest sympathy extends to the entire family.
Jerrie was a vivacious, charming and much loved lady. She was cherished by her Army Daughters sisters and will be missed but remembered with affection and gratitude by the NOVA Chapter especially.
In sympathy and sadness for your loss.
Sincerely, Linda Ely

Jerrie was an inspiring family and personal friend of long standing who will be sorely missed. Her dearest Bob was a classmate and friend of my father's. She led a wonderful life to include graduating high school in the Philippines and a trip through China as it was before WW II.

As President of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Society of Daughters of the United States Army, she successfully led the Society and her Chapter through a disquieting time in the late 1970s. We are ever in her debt.
