Jewell Blackburn Obituary

BLACKBURN
Jewell Fannin Haddock Blackburn, 96, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2018 at Community Hospice St. Vincent's Southside. She was a Christian woman and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.
She was born in St. Augustine, Florida, to Oscar Hollis Fannin and Jewell Sellars Fannin. She attended Landon High School, where she was a "Marching Lionette", and Florida Southern University. She was a loving wife and mother who raised three children in an extremely happy home. Her life was defined by her love for children. She began working in the PTA when her children entered school, and was the President of the Ruth N. Upson, John Gorrie Jr. High, Lee High School, Duval County Council of PTA's. and the State PTA. She also held several offices in the National PTA. In 1969 she was appointed by Gov. Claude Kirk to the Advisory Committee of the Florida Division of Youth Services. She was a member of the first Board of Trustees of Florida State College Jacksonville and served during the college's critical first decade. She was the first woman to serve on each of those bodies. She was a licensed lobbyist for the State and National PTA's, as well as the Florida Pest Control Association. She was very active in the Riverside Women's Club and the United Methodist Church.
Jewell was predeceased by two loving and devoted husbands, Duval County Judge Lawrence Page Haddock, Sr. and Bishop Robert M. Blackburn, Bishop of the North Carolina and Virginia Conferences of the United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter Nancy Haddock Price (John), of Tequesta, Florida, her son, Senior Circuit Judge Lawrence Page Haddock, Jr. (Christy), of Jacksonville, and her daughter Elizabeth Haddock Ruvo (Richard), of Palm Coast, Florida. She is also survived by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Monday, March 12th, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in The Chapel at Southside United Methodist Church, 3120 Hendricks Ave. Rev. Bruce Jones will officiate.
