John was a wonderful friend, mentor and colleague. I cherish the few pictures I have of him- of course he is smiling! I will always remember him fondly.

As we go through life we meet thousands of people. Out of those thousands there are but a few who you know right away you were fortunate to have encountered. Of that few there is an even smaller, more select group, who leave such an impression on you that you always remember them and know you are a better person because you met. Dr. Farmer is one of that select group.
When you first met him, his modesty and humility coupled with his humorous nature attempted to conceal his vast level of knowledge and understanding of the world and its workings. However shortly after meeting him it became readily clear that his depth as a person went well beyond his smile, good nature and positive spirit. Whether composing a Bill of Rights for the students in Florida, delving into the psyche of a patient in crisis, or perhaps discussing and quoting the features and statistics of Dodge’s newest sports car, his diversity of knowledge and perception of how things worked reaffirmed that he was no ordinary person. Rather he was that person whom I knew the education system and everyone in it were better off just because he was a part of it. In fact the very best advice I have ever received, but failed to follow was from him. As a lost and meandering degree tracks college student in 1988, he encouraged me to pursue the computer field. He emphasized the world would someday become centered around those old Apple computers we only used for playing crude games on…..but then what did he know anyway- right?!
Mrs. Farmer, Dawn and Jon, please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. The world really is a better place because he was here, thank you for sharing him with us.

I first met John when I was hired as Campus Dean at FCCJ. He was very experienced and well-known throughout the state for various initiatives related to student articulation and student development. I learned much from John and he has left a wonderful legacy behind that will live on for years to come in this state and in the hearts of all who knew him. My deepest sympathy to his entire family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Farmer family. I worked indirectly with John over 25 years at FCCJ. He was always funny and interesting to be around. I know he will be greatly missed by many people. I know the family has many great memories and I pray they will help them through this time of sorrow. God bless all.

A father that was always there for his children. He had a great sense of humor that was past on to his children. We will miss him.

Dear George and Debi,
We are very sorry for your loss. You know if there is anything that we can do for you, we are here. Peace is something we all only get when we go home to the Lord.
Love you both,
Nancy and Steve

John was a dear friend and colleague. I had the pleasure of working with him for 32 years. John always made work more fun. He had an ability to cheer up everyone. John was way ahead of his time in his desire to use computing to better serve students. In fact he introduced automated degree audit to FJC/FCCJ and was involved in managing it for years. John was also one of the strongest men I have ever known. I recall all the data center arm wrestling contests where he hardly had to try to win. John will be missed. My prayers and thoughts are with his family.
