Joe was my immediate boss while at Seaboard System Railroad in Jacksonville (during the process of seeking merger approval with Chessie to form CSX) back in the late 1980s, and was always such a gentleman and a boss you looked up to. Although I left the company in 1981, I never lost my memories of working for Seaboard (and old L&N) and my time working along with Joe, and how much respect he had for not only those under his immediate jurisdiction, but for all his co-workers. My honest respect for Joe will remain in my mind forever, and my sincerest sympathy goes to his survivors.

I was associated with Joe for many years at CSX. In fact, he was my boss, but that title does not fit here. He was a true friend and confidant. We kept in touch regularly after we retired even though he moved to Simpsonville. Joe had the utmost respect from the many major chemical shippers and co-workers he encountered over his years at CSX. He will be missed by many.
My wife, Marie, and I send our deepest condolence to Jim, Jill and all of Joe's family.
