Lloyd Butler Obituary

BUTLER Lloyd Morton Butler, Jr., 89, passed away peacefully in his sleep April 18, 2015. Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island in 1926, he was in his 70th year of marriage to his high school sweetheart, Marion (Lund), also of Pawtucket. He is survived by Marion, his sons Richard (Carol), Steve (Rebecca), and Bill (Eileen), 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and his sister Mary Lou Raymond (Phil), of Vacaville, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Sr. and Evelyn, his brother Richard (Sue), and his son Marshall (Carole). Lloyd was an All-State swimmer at East HS in Saylesville, RI, and earned varsity letters in swimming and soccer at Brown University. Following his Navy enlisted service during WW II, he received a Navy ROTC scholarship to Brown, and a Naval Reserve commission upon graduation in June 1947. Recalled to active duty in the Korean War, he served aboard USS Bergall (SS-320), a New London, CT-based diesel submarine, and was awarded his submarine dolphin qualifications at sea during that conflict. After his Korea service, Lloyd, Marion and their two eldest sons relocated to Jacksonville, FL. He continued his Naval Reserve service for another 25 years, including command of an OPCON unit at NAS Jacksonville, and retired as a Navy Captain in 1978 after 35 years of service. In 1969 with Jack Demetree (USAF) and Joe Long (USMC), Lloyd founded Demetree, Long and Butler, Insurance Agency, serving construction, commercial and residential clients in NE Florida. Now in its 5th decade it's known as Demetree Insurance Services, Inc. Lloyd served as trustee, deacon and head usher for over 50 years at Arlington Congregational Church; was its BSA Troop 263 leader and District Committee member for the No FL Council's Shawnee District, and received the Scouts highest adult leader honor, the Silver Beaver award. He was president of the Arlington Kiwanis Club, and was active in Toastmasters and other community organizations. A memorial service with full military honors, a scattering of ashes, and a reception will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Arlington Congregational Church, 431 University Blvd. North, Jacksonville, 32211. In lieu of flowers send donations to N FL Council, Boy Scouts of America, 521 S. Edgewood Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32205. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

My condolences to the Butler family. I was a classmate, fellow NROTC midshipman and fraternity brother of Capt Butler's son Bill. I only met Capt Butler on a few occasions but he was always gracious and helpful. RIP. Cdr Charles Grabill, USNR ret.
