Mary Frances McGee Campbell

Mary Campbell Obituary

CAMPBELL Mary Frances McGee Campbell, 84, of Jacksonville, slipped into the arms of Jesus on Friday, August 6, 2010, surrounded by family. Born July 12, 1926 in Corinth, Mississippi to Hiram and Tressie McGee, Mary was the oldest of four siblings. Her early life was in Sheffield, AL. She attended the University of Alabama where she majored in Home Economics and Textile Merchandizing. While there she met her husband of 62 years, James Calvin Campbell. From 1948 - 1967 the couple lived in five different states, but moved to Atlantic Beach in 1967 and made their home there. In the early seventies, she received her Masters in Elementary Education from Jacksonville University and taught at Fletcher High and Finegan Elementary School for nearly twenty years. Throughout her career, she touched the lives of many children and their families, and was recipient of the Teacher-Student Humanitarian Award presented by B'nai B'rith for promoting understanding among all students in 1973. Mary loved to sew and could make or recover just about anything. She was an avid gardener and her home was known as 'the house with the flowers.' She also loved to read, travel, and take photos of the places she visited. Mary was a longtime member of Community Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of Hodges Blvd. Presbyterian Church, where she served on the Steering Committee as well as on the Session. Survivors include her devoted husband, James C. Campbell; one brother, William (Nina) McGee of Tuscumbia, AL, five children, James C. (Jozette), Cathy Campbell Woodard (Bobby), Andy D. Campbell (Velma), Scott D. Campbell (Michele) all of Jacksonville, and Sally Campbell-Evans (Clarke) of Tallahassee, plus 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren who will always love her. Special thanks to all of her caregivers, who attended to her throughout her illness. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Hodges Blvd. Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. Memorial gifts may be made to Hodges Blvd. Presbyterian Church, 4140 Hodges Road, Jacksonville, FL 32224. What a dear, dear person. Soft of voice but rock solid in her beliefs and dedication. Mary was always aware of other people and made a point to allow other points of view to be expressed. She and her husband, Jim, have been very good fiends of each of the Presbyterian congregations that they have been members of and a very good friend of the Presbytery of St. Augustine.
