Dear Diane, Katie, Donna & Robin,
What a pleasure it was to know Coach Milt. My favorite memory will be our lively discussions of FSU sports, particularly football! Also his endless entertainment when riding over to Tallahassee for a football game. Time flew when Coach Milt rode with us. What a wonderful man! He will be missed.

I was a colleague of Milt at Fletcher Sr. High School and I still remember him saying "mornin", no matter what the time of day it was. After a while you just answered morning in return.( smile ) I remember him being a stand up kind of guy that said what was on his mind. In fact, as I recalled, he couldn't stand for people to beat around the bush. He made me laugh and he was so cheerful and outgoing. He was such a realist and what you saw is what he was. He was one of a kind. You couldn't help but like him. I know that you all willl miss him dearly but his memory will never fade. My deepest sympathy go out to the family and may god bless and keep you.

Long live the "Mornin Man" in our memories.. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. He had a great sense of humor and a great love for football as I recall the guys were always able to get him going after the lesson for the day was done. He will be missed!

Dear Cooper Family,
I'm so sorry to hear about Mr. Cooper's passing. He was truly someone special. I remember his "Mournin" and would walk down "C" hall at FHS just to hear him say it, it was a great way to start the day. I also remember he use to say when it was his time he wanted a big Mardi Gras band playing to celebrate his life. Reading all these posts he is a man we will forever celebrate.

Family,

While looking at photos of this wonderful man, one photo struck me. It was a picture of a man who had been ill, but still continued to show his love of children by looking at a 6 year old boy and telling him what to do on a baseball field. It looked as if your father needed to hold on to something to stand. Yet, his love for children, his love for sports and his integrity would not allow him to disappoint the child.

How proud you must be to have been chosen by God to be a part of his life. I know you are all very sad right now, but I pray his memories will bring comfort to you very soon.

Coach Cooper was my first swim team coach at Selva Marina Country Club. I will always remember his cheerful hello (Mornin!) even though it was too early in the morning to be cheerful. I then reconnected with him at Fletcher High. Although I was not a student of his, he was always my coach, and he treated each and every one of us as if we were special to him. That is what I loved most about Coach Cooper. He will surely be missed! I loved seeing the picture of him with Bobby Bowden! What a great picture. Two legendary coaches!

To the Cooper family:

"Coach" Cooper was one of my warmest, funniest, all-time favorite teachers. As the only girl in his A.P. European History class, I always felt that he cut me a lot of slack. Apparently, he did, too, when he gave me a gilded hall pass at the end of the year to celebrate my frequent absences! He also raved about his daughters although more than once he told me he'd give me an "A" in exchange for naming one (or all) of my future sons Milton and/or Cooper! To his family, please know that Coach Cooper was and will always be fondly remembered by many.

Before the "History Channel", there was Milt Cooper, who made our eleventh grade history class come alive. Whether Coach Cooper was quoting Frederick of Prussia's virtues of "Work, Order, Discipline", or teaching on the Roman civilization during the "Pax Romana", there was no nodding off to sleep in the animated and interesting lectures encountered in Coach Cooper's class. His love of history showed through and through and I'm grateful for not only that, but his Christian witness, both in the classroom and on the athletic field.

To the Coopers:

The Earth has lost one of the greatest men to ever set foot upon its face. Of all the teachers that I had, Coach Cooper was the only one I ever liked, and the only one that actually taught me anything. It is no secret that I was a horrid student, but Coach Cooper lit a spark within me that kindled into a fiery passion for history. I have spent untold hours researching history and that never would have happened without Coach Cooper. I still remember his proclamation of "Work! Order! Discipline!" from the very first class that I had with him; I knew right away that he was a great man and that I was going to thoroughly enjoy his class....and the funniest thing was that I was barely passing anything else, but I was scoring 95's or better in his class. I will forever be grateful to Coach Cooper - the only teacher that mattered.

May 22, 2008

Sadness struck me as I was assaulted with the news of Coach Coopers Home Going. My history with Coach is far more extensive than just contact on the football field for three years. I knew his wife, who coached at JEB Stuart when I was there; I knew his Dad, who I visited as he was very ill in St Vincents as my daughter was being born-his focus only on my happiness and not on his problem; I knew sister Cindy as we negotiated the slipperly slopes of high school as she got me thru more than one heartbreak; and I knew sister Georgette as she has helped me in several crisis in my life with encouragement and advocacy on my behalf to others. Coach was more than a coach, as he was often divinely placed in my life at times when I needed that Godly council that one can get from a favorite uncle. I am told to be glad when I hear that someone has been removed from their suffering and placed in the loving arms of Jesus. And it is comforting to think of Coach there and with that incredible smile on his face. But I must admit I feel a little selfish as I know I will miss him. I will just have to concentrate on how much my life has been blessed by having him and the whole Cooper family in my life's journey.

To Coach Cooper's Family:

Coach Cooper gave me the opportunity to follow my dream and play HS football at NB Forrest. Even though I was the last player selected for the JV team, he gave me a chance. When I was a starter my senior year, he said he was proud of my staying tough.

We had a healthy respect for him and his "Marine" approach to teaching us.

Rest in peace Coach. May God give you eternal rest.

The unimaginable influence of an educator is often reflected in the number of their students who choose to pursue a career in education because of that educator's impact upon their life. Dear Cooper's,
Many years have passed since Coach crossed my path as a teacher and coach for my brothers (NBF 70 & 73), as an umpire with my Dad, knowing his Dad through the Schwinn Co., as a co-worker with my husband at FHS, and the full circle of teaching my eldest daughter (FHS 05). I would have never dreamt I would run into him again when I moved to the beach. To meet his wife and girls (What is it with coaches only having girls!) and building a friendship that will always be cherished. Dear Cooper Family,

I received the call on Sunday afternoon about Coach. I am truly sorry for your loss and the loss of such a great man. Someone commented earlier that they were never quite sure if Coach liked him.. I have to admit that there were times where I felt the same way. Then I was lucky enough to take Robin to a Homecoming dance and I figured that there was no way he would ever let his daughter go with me if he didn't like me. I also realized how much he was pushing me to become a better and more competitive tennis player.

I will never forget traveling to away matches in the back of his station wagon listening to his stories. There wasn't a match that he didn't come up to me and say "Schnabel! Hit the damn ball! His advice was priceless, like one time when I felt like I was getting horrible line calls. Coach Cooper told me..."Son, if he's cheating you, you cheat him right back!" I did on one call and that's all it took. I went on to win that match and the finals to win district that year.

He will truly be missed! My deepest sympathy goes out to all of you. You are in my prayers.

This is such a time of contradiction for me. I am sad that I will no longer have Uncle Bubba here on this earth to make me laugh and to be the glue that has always bound me to the Cooper side of my family. At the same time, I am grateful that he has gone on to his greater reward. I am happy for the times I spent with him and sad for the wait I will endure until I am able to spend more time with him. Butch Baker

May 20, 2008

Diane and Family,
Your husband and father still lives on today inside the souls and bodies of his first football team in 1961 at Forrest. Butch Baker, Eddie Crook, Don Roberts, John Higbe, John Weaver, Craig Honour, Phil Taylor, Pancho Brennan, Wayne Anderson, and Maurice Samples are some of those players that were taught how to be successful football players, students, citizens, Christians, and MEN by Milton St. George Cooper. Even Coach Cooper’s dad, the senior St. George Cooper was an integral part of our lives.
Our memories are many listening to Coach Cooper. He would say “don’t chase the skirts”, “go home and do your homework”, “pray for all of your teammates and also the players on the opposite team”, “give this game everything you’ve got because that’s the way you’ll need to approach life after football”. Our practices were hard, but we understood why. On game day, we were physically and mentally prepared for the challenge.
There are also vivid memories of the senior St. George at one of our football games against Englewood. Senior was sitting in the stands before the game listening to this Englewood man talking about what a slaughter this game was going to be. We were a small “rag-tag” team according to this Englewood man. St. George spoke up and said “my son is coaching this ‘rag-tag’ team and I’ll bet you $20 we’ll win”. Needless to say, we won, 28-0 and the Englewood man could not believe what he just saw. But Senior knew that his son had prepared his athletes to do their best and the outcome would prove it.
Coach Cooper provided all of us the guidance we needed to start our athletic & academic careers. All of us guys are close and we speak often of the positive impact that he had on our lives.
So remember, “Coach” lives on. Coach is looking down upon his family and saying “don’t grieve upon my loss, rather follow my lessons of life and encourage all young people to be strong, responsible, and have faith”. Your husband & father was a great inspiration to many people and you need to be proud of his accomplishments. You know, I can just see “Coach” telling the good Lord “don’t chase the skirts, do your homework, and pray for all those around you”. God bless you!
From: both of St. George’s boys : Butch, Eddie, Don, John, John, Craig, Phil, Pancho, Wayne, Maurice, and all.

Dear Donna and family,
We are truly sorry for the loss of your precious Daddy. Your face always lights up when you talk about him, and it is obvious that you shared a very special relationship with him. Your sweet memories of him will live in your heart forever!

It is our prayer that you feel the peace that comes only from Jesus Christ as you face the difficult time ahead. We love you and will continue to keep your family in our prayers.

With much love,
Don and Carroll Miniard & family

I was playing basketball for Jeff Davis Jr. High back around the early 1960's and Coach was the football coach there. Didn't matter whether I was a footballer or a student of another sport. We still knew each other and I learned from him as well. My learning and acceptance of his genuine interest in developing good qualities in the youth that surrounded him continued on at Forrest High over on Westconnett Blvd. Coach was my swimming coach there and my History teacher. It has been a lifelong thrill knowing that he liked me and that I learned from a master at life. He was a great man and one whom I will never forget. It was a wonderful experience when I once again saw him and talked to him at our 35th NBF class reunion in 2001.

He is now in a far better place than we. He will prepare for our arrival someday and then we can resume our reunion with him in the presence of our Lord. God bless you Mrs. Cooper and your family.

Mr. Cooper has been a strong influence on the lives of so many students. His personality, his work ethic, his philosophy of life, and his wonderful story telling have left a powerful mark on my life. I still re-tell his stories often to the people I meet here in Japan.

Should I meet Mr. Cooper in the next life I will tell him these things he taught me:

"It's always Mornin! My day is always looking up!"

and

"WORK, ORDER, DISCIPLINE!"

I hope that his family and his friends do not mourn for long. He was full of life and vibrantcy, full of depth and humor. Though he will be missed, I will always fondly remember him and his teaching.

Mr. Cooper was an incredible teacher. You could tell he not only loved to teach, he genuinely cared for the students in his class. He was both guardian and encourager.

Even 8+ years after I'd graduated he knew me by name when we'd run into each other at Publix. He was and still is an incredible treasure to our community. He will be greatly missed. God bless your whole family.

Our 5 children were friends/classmates to Coach Milt and Diane Coopers children. They would tell the other kids that they were related because their Dads were brothers. We were very fortunate that our children were associated with Coach Milt Cooper, either in class or with other activities at Fletcher High School. We are greatful for his influence on our family. We will miss him.

Donna, Catie and Diane -and all of the family. My heart is with you all.

God our Father,
Your power brings us to birth,
Your providence guides our lives,
and by Your command we return to dust.

Lord, those who die still live in Your presence,
their lives change but do not end.
I pray in hope for my family,
relatives and friends,
and for all the dead known to You alone.

In company with Christ,
Who died and now lives,
may they rejoice in Your kingdom,
where all our tears are wiped away.
Unite us together again in one family,
to sing Your praise forever and ever.

Amen.

Dear Cooper Family,

My first memories of Coach Cooper are from 1968 as a Forrest H.S. student. As a kid I wondered why he was so intense. It took awhile but I eventually realized it was because he loved what he was doing and cared about kids.

Through the years I occasionally saw him and each time it was very pleasant remembering his efforts to point young people in the right direction.

Thanks Coach

The last time that I saw Uncle Bubba he was dancing at Heather's wedding. I knew how sick he was, but he was always so amazing that he pushed through all of that. He really looked like he was enjoying himself that night, and he gave me a big hug to top it off. Love never ends, and the love that he shared with me will live with me and those that I love forever. See you Thursday.

Aunt Diane, Catie, Donna, Robin & family:

I will truly miss Uncle Bubba! He could always make me laugh. He touched so many people in so many different ways. He was a great man and a GREAT uncle! I was very sad to learn he passed on my birthday but at least I know he is now in a better place and I cannot wait to see him again. I loved him very much and I am truly sorry for your loss. I will miss the way he called me "DARLIN' (DAHLIN')". My thoughts are with all of you. I love you all!

My heart breaks for the loss of such a great man - my Uncle "Bubba." Loving and kind, yet strong and tough like no other. I will miss his story-telling of childhood events and family "folklore." He was definitely one of a kind and there will be an obvious void in this world. My love and sympathy to all who loved and respected him, and especially Aunt Diane, Catie, Donna, and Robin and their families.

Mrs. Cooper, Donna, Catie and Robin,
I am deeply sorry for your loss. I didn't know your Dad long but I knew he was a good man. You can judge a man by the way he is loved by his children. For that I knew he was a great father. Be so thankful he touched so many lives in a positive way. We will keep your family in our prayers. If you need anything please call.
Love,
