Memories and Condolences
for Peter Fryefield

Not sure what to say?

October 4, 2009

Peter made this world a better place. He was kind and caring. Although I haven't seen him since high school, I did exchange a few "notes" on Classmates recently. I lost touch with most people after moving away in 1971. He never mentioned his illness. We have lost a wonderful man and friend; Heaven has gained a beautiful Angel.

I'm sorry this is belated.

From other Englewood Class of 67 friends of Peter:
My mother and Peter's mother worked together in the office at the PicNSave on University for many years while Peter and I were growing up at Englewood. I hadn't seen him in many years although we did email a few times. I just turned 60 yesterday so it saddens me even more that he died on my birthday. I will always remember him.
Debarah Hardee Peck

Thank you for your notification. I was fortunate to be in touch with Peter last week and he will indeed be missed.
Pam Weisenfeld Ubl

The list of classmates we have lost is already long. But, this is the first lost that is so personal to me. The others have been people I knew, but never as close. Peter was my friend, for fifty years! That is what I said to him. That even though we had not seen each other much over the years since we graduated, I still considered him my friend. And, I would always be proud to call him friend. Judi Watson Fraser

I really thank you for the text yesterday and the Gator win was overshadowed by the loss of Peter Fryefield. If you look in our Senior annual you'll see Peter and I playing in a talent show. He was a good friend and what I've read, a successful attorney and continued his love of music and life.Curtis Huckaby

I just opened the email you sent. I am very suprised and shocked at the news of Peters death. I did not realize his sclerodoma had progressed so far. I had just written to him last week in response to your previous email concerning his illness. We had so many classes together at EHS. Mellie Herbert Ray

I was so sorry to hear the news of Peter’s passing; thanks for passing this on and including the link to his obituary. We will be unable to attend any services or memorials, but our prayers will be with his family.
Regards,
Reid Lester

Thank you for sharing the sad news of Peter's passing with us. I have such fond memories of Peter and will keep his family in my thoughts and prayersFondly,
Nancy Rice Hill

My heart breaks for Peter's family. I have a freind out here that died of that horrible disease and it is so very painful, pretty rare and there is no cure.
One more time I am reminded that you DO NOT put things off. I had made a note of Peter's e-mail and was going to send him a note of encouragement and a card
as he was waiting for his lung transplant. I did not get to it and now it is too late.
Regards,
Diane Minard Grattaroti

I am so sorry...
When I heard of him getting a double lung transplant I emailed him...and said I know you don't know me very well(we would only say hi in school that's about it)but I found it necessary to email him and wishing him well...He emailed me back and said of course I remember you and thanking me for the email and well wishes...
I cried when I read your email.Linda Wahlstedt Jackson

Peter's mother Ann and my mother worked together in the office at the PicNSave on University while Peter and I were at Englewood. I always liked him and it saddens me even more that he died on my birthday. It makes the getting "old" hit home just that much harder. Deb Hardee Peck

I just spoke to Pete on Friday, and he was looking forward to leaving the hospital, " on his own two feet." It seemed they didn't have a donor available and he was just trying to get well enough to go home. This is so sad. He was a kind, gentle, fair person and I'm sure this was the way he conducted his career decisions.
He will be missed. He also said, " he couldn't believe the number of peole that had reached out to him with messages of such encouragment. That love made him realize how old friends mean so much to all of us.
Take care all of my old friends,
Carla

Linda, this is Ken Clarke in Orlando. Thank you for passing along the news of Pete's death, difficult as it was for you. I am shocked. Pete was the kind of guy the world needs -- smart and witty, personable and honorable. He was also so classy and fun.

Peter Fryefiled was one of the nicest people that I have ever known. He was a good friend in High School. I suppose that is because he was so good to everyone. Always upbeat, always a happy and encouraging person. This seemed to never change with Peter. In the times that we spoke throughout the years since our school days, I always found in Peter that same genuine and warm-hearted gentleness that seemed to say: "I have time for you."
The friends that we are entrusted with in this life are treasures of the heart. I am glad to have know Peter as a friend. And, I am so blessed to see our friends being able to get together at the Jax rallys. It makes me feel so happy to see the faces of old acquaintances enjoying one another.
I can see Peter in my mind's eye - as a teenager - an adult - a Judge. Oh, Peter? I will never forget him!
Ralph Rodriguez

I have seen Pete only a few times since we graduated, but I was always a fan of his. He represented the best in us. Remember as seniors when Pete was named Mr. Englewood in a contest sponsored by the Rampage, of which I was a staff member? He won because of the sheer admiration of his classmates. And when he earned accolades Pete remained humble and real. The guy did not know how to be phony. Pete Fryefield a poser? You might as well ask him to flap his arms and fly. It wasn't going to happen. We have lost a damn fine man!
Ken Clarke

My dad loved Peter. Dad was an alto sax player and played in the band until he was 75 (he died at 87). Peter used to come over and talk "music" with Dad, then when he was invested, he asked me to bring Dad --who was thrilled.
Peter and I "walked" together; we had just know each other so long.
Peter's death just takes my breath away; I cried all morning. He will so be missed.
Pam Ubl

Linda, I can hear the hurt in your words about Peter. You explained this all very well to us. I am sorry to hear of Peter's death. Peggy Preusler

This is too sad. I remember Peter as someone that was very intelligent and always seemed mature beyond his years, unlike some of us. God Bless him! Patsy Peek

To Peter Fryefield's Family - May God give you peace at this time. Peter was such a wonderful person - friendly to everyone and helpful as well, always smiling & lots of fun. I enjoyed having him in many of my classes at Hogan Spring Glen, Southside Jr. High & then at Englewood. What a fulfilling contribution to our community! He will be missed by all. Love & Prayers - Carol Duarte Shaffer - Englewood Class of 67.
Dear Barbara and family…
Peter was such a remarkable person. He touched more people than any of us will ever know. I attended school with Peter at Englewood and we had a number of classes together. Even if it was a bad day, I could walk into the classroom and see Peter’s smiling face and it brightened my day and I know it did for others too. His smile and personality were infectious and he was a special person that was just bigger than life even as a teenager. We also shared the same birth date and that was fun.
It is so very, very sad when a loved one is taken especially prematurely. The days ahead will be challenging and I know this from firsthand experience, sorry to say, BUT I can also tell you that your faith, each other and all the wonderful memories will most certainly carry you through. You will cry together, laugh together when reminiscing and you will sit in silence with each other and when you do, just look at each other and know this wonderful man lives in you and will be a part of your life forever. Nothing can take that away not even death.God bless you and may the peace of the Lord comfort and strengthen you always. In His love and mine, Sandy Hills McCoy

I was saddened to hear about Peter. When I saw Peter's graduation picture a lot of memories came back. Such a shame, but what a great guy!

I'm so sorry to hear of Peter's passing. I knew Peter from Englewood HS, and we both loved folked music and golf, and I still remember him playing his guitar...he was a very kind person, and I know he will be missed.
My sincere sympathy to his family.

The last time I saw Peter he made me feel as if we had seen each other just the day before, although in fact it had been years. He truly lived by the creed of Tau Epsilon Phi:

TO LIVE in the light of Friendship — to judge our fellows not by their rank nor wealth but by their worth as men.

TO WALK in the path of Chivalry

TO SERVE for the love of Service

TO PRACTICE each day friendship — chivalry — service

To You Eternal Friendship!

I was privileged to work as trial clerk for both Hudson Olliff and then Judge Fryefield as he and Beverly came to join us at the courthouse. While there were major differences in the way they handled themselves, there was one thing that fit Judge Fryefield perfectly, and that was adding "Honorable" before his name. I suspect, even though I knew him a short time, that it had always been a major part of what defined him. My family and I are so very sorry to hear of your loss. Please know you have our deepest sympathy and prayers.

My wife, Helen, and I, were greatly saddened when we were informed of Peter's passing. We were all classmates at Englewood High School, and I was a friend and school mate with Peter since elementary school at Hogan Spring Glen. I can still remember Peter as a running back in football at Southside Junior High. Even though he was the smallest player out there, he gave it everything he had everytime and never backed down. I also was honored to attend his Bar Mitzvah and was very impressed with his passion and commitment to his religion. Peter, we will miss you, and send our condolences to the family.

Dear Family,

I grew up in Jacksonville and knew Peter through youth groups associated with the Jewish community. We graduated the same year from high school, and I attended Wolfson. All of his friends knew that he would be very happy and successful. I remember how he loyally worked at the Young Men's Shop at the mall to earn money for college.

It was very shocking to learn that he suffered and had his wonderful life cut off in this way. My heart goes out to all of you. His legacy will flourish through his children and all the people he helped during his remarkable career as a lawyer and judge.

Regards at this very difficult time.

It appears that the Honorable Judge Fryefield has elicited the truth and nothing but the truth from our classmates at EHS Class of 67. I concur with the comments made by Judi, Paul, Wanda, Richard, et al. I am proud to have known Peter. I missed an opportunity to speak to him last year when I was testifying in Judge Weatherby's courtroom. So now in death, I say Shalom Peter. Until we all meet again. Shalom, Shalom.

I worked with and met Peter when he was a partner @ Allen, Margol & Fryefield. He was always kind to me and had a smile on his face, even during some pretty tumultuous times. I always appreciated his calm, patient demeanor. Those same qualities made his a great judge.

He will be sorely missed by the legal community.

I am another member of the "First Friends" club. Peter and I first met in Mrs. McCulley's fifth grade class in 1959. He and I were the new kids that year. So, a bond was formed. I attended his Bar Mitzvah. Our mother’s were friends and worked together in PTA for years. Peter and I were friends throughout our school years. We had classes together, attended the same parties and were just always good friends. In fifty years, the essential Peter never changed. I cannot think of Peter without seeing his smile. He was the Best and the Brightest, in all respects. Simply put, everyone loved Peter. I am glad to have seen him a couple of times in the past year and especially glad I got to exchange emails with him in the last week. I have always been proud to call Peter my Friend, but never more than now. He has given us all a lesson in leaving with grace, class and dignity. Go in Peace my old Friend. You will be missed, but always remembered with love and affection. I extend my love, and sympathies to Peter’s loved ones.

I am sorry to hear about Peter's passing. While we were not close friends, I respected him greatly and know that he will be missed by everyone whose life he touched.

To Rick Fryefield, and Peter Fryefield's Family, my deepest and most heart felt condolences. I remember working with Peter Fryefield in 1980 and walking with him to a deposition, and that humble but magnetic smile. I remember Peter Fryfield's former Office on JTB and visiting him and discussing his appointmemt to the Bench. I will miss being "bumped" into by Peter Fryefield at airports when he would be on his way to a Bluegrass Festival holding a guitar case in one hand, and a Banjo in the other. I remember the Great advice that Judge Peter Fryefield offered me when he was in the Family Law Division that made him proud of me.
With great Respect, I will miss You Peter J. Fryefield. The lives that you have touched will never forget you.

To the Fryefield Family:
It was with great sadness we learned of Peter's death upon returning from out of town. We have fond memories of Peter, Diane and Peter's mom when they were neighbors in Blackhawk. I know he will be greatly missed by his family and huge number of friends. Our deepest sympathies to you all.

I was saddened when I received the news of Peter's passing from my brother yesterday. Peter was certainly and outstanding individual who set high standards for himself throughout his lifetime. I first met him in elementary school in the late 50's and even at an early age was impressed by the way he applied himself to whatever held his interest. Back in the days of junior and senior high school when we young men were given a task most of us would do just enough to "get by". Peter, on the other hand, would really focus on how to do the best job he could on the assignment. He obviously continued this all his life based on all that he accomplished and the feelings held by so many dear friends. He will certainly be missed but I know I speak for all who knew him both professionally and socially when I say how fortunate we were to have been able to call him a friend.

My deepest condolences to the family. I practiced in front of Judge Fryefield as an intern in the PD's office & he swore me in as an attorney when I passed the bar. He was a kind & temperate man. I think what I'll remember most about him is walking into his chambers to discuss a case & finding him playing the guitar. He looked up, said "what ya got?", answered my question & then went back to playing his guitar. He will be greatly missed.

To Peter's children and Barbara,
We are so devastated by the news of Peter's passing. We are his Englewood buddies and not too long ago he attended one of our rallys and told us that horrible disease had returned. He even emailed me recently when he was in Mayo and we got the news out to our 67 Rams class. He said the outpouring of well wishes really lifted him up and I am so glad.
I always ran into Peter at concerts, ball games, restaurants, and his youngest daughter, Branni and my daughter were at Douglas Anderson together. Even though I didn't get to meet you Barbara, you and Peter were a row or two in front of me at the Florida/Georgia game. Every time Pete and I ran into each other in Gainesville or Jax we would laugh and say we have great taste in places we like to go as we both were always there.
We will miss his great smile and upbeat personality. My heart is so heavy for you and us in his loss.
We have him on our class website if you would like to visit it.

Please know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers for your peace and comfort.

I graduated from Englewood with Peter and attended Hogan Spring Glenn Elementary with him. I recall a field trip our 6th grade class made to Channel 4. Morning hostess Virginia Atter asked for two students to introduce to the TV audience. Peter and I were selected. We stood by her chair as she asked our names. Years later I worked indirectly with Peter supervising probation officers who prepared reports for his court. He was highly respected. God bless him and his family.

To Barbara,

I'm so glad I had the chance to visit with you and Peter at the hospital. Peter and I go way back. He reminded me that I was his "2nd oldest friend" since moving to Jax. This time together brought back a flood of fond memories. I thought of some more since writing at CaringBridge.com. We were Patrol Boy's together at Hogan Spring Glen and went to the summer "bootcamp" at Camp Blanding. Pete and I performed a skit that went haywire in Mrs. Markowitz's class at Southside Jr High. Mrs. Craig's Latin Class was a classic. "Peter-boy" and "Paul-boy" were an unbeatable combo when it came to translating the Iliad. We set the standard day after day, with a little help from a hidden paperback.

Peter's strength and courage fighting this awful disease was inspiring. As I spoke with my wife, Leslie, she too remembered Peter as an optimist, always upbeat, and a pleasure to be with.

Peter has been a great friend, and I'll miss him. On a brighter side, he told me, that although you had been weakened by your illness, that he birdied the last hole he played at Deerwood. See what I mean about being an optimist! Where Peter is now, that birdie will be followed by an incredible string of consecutive, record-breaking rounds.

Pete's "2nd oldest friend",

Paul

I was saddened to hear of the loss of Peter. We attended Englewood-Rams '67 together and were good friends. He loved music and happiness. He was a gentleman. Being successful and respected was the only direction he could have gone and did.

Our deepest sympathies to each of you. Peter was a classmate, fellow lawyer, friend and fellow musician and an honorable man. I was privileged to know him as such these many years and the times we spent together playing music are precious to me. We will miss him dearly. He is surely in God's loving care.

I was deeply sadden of the loss of Peter. I live in Atlanta but it was not that long ago that he was at my mother's funeral. He was a very kind friend and even though I was at Wolfson we were always friends. He will definitely missed in the Jacksonville community.

Richard,

What a great loss to the community, family and friends.
I have fond memories of your precious Mother sharing stories with me of you and Peter. Mama Ann was oh so proud of her boys.
I remember the first time I met Peter, so kind.

I was assigned to Judge Fryefield's courtroom during my last year at the PD's office. He was most impressed by attorneys who fought hard for their clients. He called me up to the bench one day to tell me that one of the lawyers I supervised, a true gladiator, reminded him of himself when he was a young attorney. His family should know how respectful he was to the public- juries, defendants, witnesses, victims. He always seemed delighted to preside over a trial. I never saw him treat one class of people better than another. Every attorney I've spoken with feels exactly the same way: his passing is a major loss to the citizens of the Fourth Judicial Circuit. What a privilege to have practiced before him.

Dear Family:

I was very fortunate to have Peter as a friend during our school years at Hogan Elementary, Southside Jr. High and Englewood High School. (Class of 67)
Peter was kind and gracious to everyone he met. You never would hear him say one unkind word about anyone.

He was just a great guy to be around and he will be truly missed.

My prayers are with you during this difficult time.

An old friend,

Ricky,
You don't have to hear it from me, that your "big brother" was a very special guy...we all grew up together "in the neighboorhood" and Peter was one of us and I loved him just like one of my own brothers....
I am truly sorry and sad that we have lost Him.

Barbara and Family,
My family and I offer our sympathies on the passing of Peter.
We shared a love of music and played a lot of music together. I always felt that Peter was a musician who happened to be a judge.
Though I hadn't seen Peter for a few years I always considered him my friend.

Pete was the first lawyer I ever knew. Sitting on the beach after a surf session in 1974, we talked of surf, life an life plans. On learning I was considering law, but had my reservations about actually being able to making the trek, Pete advised, supppoorted and encouraged me to keep on. I did. We've been good friends ever since. I'll miss you, Pete!

September 7, 2009

Rick and family,
It was always a pleasure to know Peter. We played a lot of Bluegrass music together over the years and I will always remember his smile, his kindness, and his musical talent. He was one of us and we will miss him. My sincere condolences to all of his family, and especially to his brother, Rick.

I was a high school classmate of Peter's. As was his demeanor in high school, he was humble and gracious when I called to congratulate him on becoming a judge and during sporadic encounters over the years. His personality was no different -- extremely bright, a wry sense of humor, well mannered, and considerate of others. I am saddened that his life ended so soon, but pleased to know his was a life well lived. He honored his family and the community he served. Prayers and sympathies to his family.

When I left the public defender's office to go into private practice, I shared office space with Peter and worked with him on several cases. Peter was one of the most focused and driven trial lawyers I ever met. He taught me a lot about trying cases and about running a private practice. He had the perfect personality for a judge: no prejudice, ability to listen and quickly sort through facts, and unafraid to follow the law regardless whether a popular result ensued. The Fourth Judicial Circuit will not be the same without Peter.

When Peter arrived in the Office of the Public Defender in 1975 he made an immediate positive impression on all of us - attorneys, prosecutors (he once won seven trials in a row), and judges. He became a friend and someone we all admired. It truly is hard to deal with his loss.

My condolences to the family of Mr. Fryefield. Such a young age to lose such a wonderful man. We had the pleasure of being before him in court and I've never met a nicer, more understanding judge. He was very helpful and considerate of the issues before him. We were lucky he understood what we needed from him because he gave it to us without hesitation. What a sad loss for the Jacksonville community. He will be sorely missed by many. RIP, Judge Fryefield.
