Bob Hayes was the most exciting football player and sprinter that I have ever seen. I thought he was a great and good man too. I admired him so much. I know these comments come very late. May God's Blessings be upon him forever. (Doug Johnson, South Bend, Indiana)

God looked down from the heavens,
And the clouds began to roll.
He said, "Now it is time
For Me to call this soul".

God is speaking from the heavens:

I may have called this precious one,
But their spirit is with you still."

Dear Mary and Lena,

We must cherish the good times we shared with Bob. The laughter, the jokes, the happy moments are my memories. Even before Bob and I competed together as members of the 1964 Olympics, we bonded. He was my brother. We will miss him, but now he is resting, mother, no more pains, sister, and no more sorrows.

To The Family of Bob Hayes:

My prayers and deepest sympathy be with you.

Like many others, as a young girl, I remembered Bob Hayes' great track and field events. I use to beg my mother to let me and my brother go to see the "great" Bob Hayes run. He will always be remembered as "The Greatest Athlete, A Native of Jacksonville, State of Florida." My hopes are that one day he will be recognized in the NFL Hall of Fame.

I pray that God will bless his soul.

May God be with you now and always.

I will always have fond memories from 23 years ago of attending and participating in the Annual Bob Hayes Invitational for Track and Field here locally at Raines High School. To the family and friends of Bob Hayes,

My stepdaughter, Allison Eagen, her running coach, Marilynn Wills, and I will never forget the annual Bob Hayes Invitational Meets - his meets were amongst the very best, if not the best in Florida.

My stepdaughter in her senior year was 9th in girls cross country at the state meet in Jacksonville in 1996. Bob Hayes' inspiration surely contributed to her athletic and academic successes. Lynne Eagen, her mother and my spouse, died earlier the same year, on February 26, 1996. Allison was a week shy of becoming 17 years old, Lynne Eagen was 40 years old, and I was 42 years old.

I am remember him running in the Olympics, even though I was only about eleven years old at the time. I was so impressed by his athletic accomplishments.

No matter the age, surviving a loved one's death is probably the most difficult thing that the living can do. If you would like any suggestions for assisting you in this most difficult of times, please contact me at [email protected]

May God grant Bob Hayes and all his family and friends a trillion blessings, particularly in this most difficult of times.

While we are saddened, we also rejoice that we were blessed to have you for such a time as this. You left, but you returned. You did not forget us, you remembered us. Now, we pause to remember you.

The Eastside, Westside, Northside, Southside and yes, even the Beaches have produced many great athletes. Many have left, but few returned. And those that did return were not given the honor due.

Nevertheless, God has an honor waiting just for you "Bullet Bob" far greater than man can ever give.

We honored you yesterday, we honor you today and will continue to honor you hereafter.

You will be often imitated but never duplicated.

We love you. We honor you. Thanks for coming home and leaving a legacy, The Bob Hayes Invitational Track and Field Meet for the coming generations.

On behalf of the Officers and Directors of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, I want to express our deepest sympathies to the family of Bob Hayes for their loss. We are all very grateful to Bob for the significant impact he had on sports in the State of Florida.

As a longtime friend of Bob's, it was truly a pleasure to be in his company. Some of my proudest moments came when Bob talked of the example I set for him and other high school athletes while I participated in athletics at Jacksonville University. It is also a source of personal pride that our displays hang side-by-side in the Florida Sports Hall of Fame.

Our prayers are that he has now been inducted into the only Hall of Fame that matters -- God's.

I share in your loss of such a gifted life. Bob left HIS permanent mark in Sports History as well as life. He established a legacy of excellence that will be difficult to surpass. Paving the way in track & field he set a standard that will forever be HIS.

He also gave a better opportunity and inspiration to those who venture to follow in his footsteps competing at a higher standard of excellence as a athelete.

His presence on this earth will surely be missed, his accomplishments and legacy lives on.

Please find strength and comfort in the memories you've acquired while sharing, on this earth, the life of Robert (Bob) Hayes.

To the family of the late Robert" Bob Bullet" Hayes,

From the time I was 5 years old, I can remember the students at my elementary school, Susie E. Tolbert, gathering in corners to talk about the fastest human! He was some guy named, Bob Hayes. Fortunately, for me, Bob had a cousin that attended my school. (Veronica) So to us, that was just like knowing him personally! But, when I met and married my husband, Leon Harris, and he really, actually knew "Bob Bullet Crow", I could hardly beleive it! A real "Cowboy", down the street.

Bob was truly an inspiration to many a person in the Jacksonville area. May his legacy live on.

God truly in his infinite wisdom, created a wonder when he loaned Bob to us!...And for that we, the people of Jacksonville, the citizens of the northside and the people of the world, shall be forever grateful....

I beleive that Bullet Bob is up there saying thank you Lord, over and over.

He is probably saying, God was right. For truly those that wait on the Lord shalll renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint... Run on Bob, Run on. God's shall grant you continual speed. You shall not get weary!

May Bob's precious memories sustain you during these most unfamiliar days!

I remember as a young man watching Mr. Hayes play for the Dallas Cowboys. I actually think it was the first time I'd heard the City of Jacksonville mention on national TV. On 9-11-01 Heaven got one heck of an addition to its Fire Dept. On 9-18-02 it got one heck of an addition to its Track, and Football team. At the end of his life Mr Hayes could hardly walk, but isn't it comforting to know that this very minute he's again running like the wind on a heavenly track.

To the family of Robert "Crow" Hayes,

May Jesus comfort you in these sad times. It's going to be alright for Bob is a better place.

As a child I remember hearing my brother Russell speak of the "Crow", and how fast he was. When we played street ball, everyone wanted to be Bob Hayes. I quickly became a Cowboy fan, and I would be glued to the TV waiting to see the "Crow" fly past defenders on his way to the endzone. He was truly a hometown hero, and a man of honor.

Thank you for sharing Bob with us. In my heart, I will always see "Crow" going for the deep pass.

We first met Bob at the NAIA track & field meet in Sioux Falls, SD. We will always remember how he was so cool and calm before the meet, but when it came to his running the 100 yard dash, he became explosive and powerful with a can't catch me attitude. We enjoyed hosting a social gathering for the black athletes at my parent's home and Bob enjoyed that, but mentioned being homesick for Jacksonville, FL. We extend our hearfelt sympathy to the entire Hayes family.

Mr. Hayes was one of my coustomers at Jet Cleaners in the last few years and he was a nice man and very concerned about our youth. The last time I talked to Mr. Hayes he gave me an autograph for my son and he was very excited about an interview he had coming up that evening with Dan Hicken, he told me to be sure to watch it and when he came back in 2 days later he came right over to made sure I watched it and to ask me what my son thought of it. To the Family of Bob Hayes:

BULLET BOB HAYES

“Crow” was a “Homeboy” from “J-Ville”. Everyone on the “Hill” talked about Crow (Robert Hayes). How he could run both on the football field and on the track. I am privileged to have seen him run on both the track field and on the football field in Bragg Stadium with the mighty FAMU Rattlers. I also consider it a privilege to have walked the campus with Bob Hayes and to see and hear him and the others selling “wolf tickets” on the set in front of the Student Union Building and Cafeteria. The "Crow" backed up the tickets that he sold on the football field on Saturdays in Bragg Stadium.

Probably my most vivid memories of Bob Hayes was as a member of the Famous Florida A. and M. University 400-yard relay team. Now the 100-yard dash was a spectacular event but when Crow ran the 100 somehow it was over so quickly. I would hear the starting gun and then there was “the Crow” breaking the tape. There was not much in between to see. There was not much time for cheering; the event was so very fast. The members of that famous relay team were Alfred Austin, Robert (China Doll) Palmore, Robert (Bullet) Harris and Robert (Crow) Hayes. Hayes was the anchor but the other three were equally as impressive to me and after all, Al Austin was also a “homeboy” from Stanton. As a team they were a force to contend with, the three Roberts and Al leaving all of the competition in the dust. Just ask any of the runners and coaches from “back in the day.”

Yes, I remember the days before the world discovered “The Crow”, a.k.a, “The Bullet, “the World’s Fastest Human”. In those days, his teammate, Bob Harris was called “ Bullet”. Even before Tokyo and the Cowboys, Bob Hayes was one of the World’s Greatest Athletes. We knew it then!
