Salvatore J. Vona LAWRENCEVILLE - Salvatore J. Vona, 94, of Lawrenceville died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, in the Hamilton Continuing Care Center, Hamilton. Born in South Amboy, Mr. Vona lived there all of his life until moving to St. Mary's Assisted Living, Lawrenceville, in April. He was employed by E.I. DuPont & Co., Parlin, for 44 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1980. He was a member of St. Mary's R.C. Church, South Amboy. He belonged to the Holiday Beagle Club and was a field judge. Sal ran his own Beagle. He loved to tell old stories and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed watching and discussing the games. Son of the late Ermino and Frances Sciallo Vona, he was also predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Peter, Patrick, Stephen, Anthony, Ermino, Catherine, Antoinette and Lucy. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mary J. Grabowski Vona; his sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick and Janis Vona of Ewing, Thomas and JoAnne Vona of Freehold and James and Nancy Vona of Lebanon; his brothers, John Vona of South Amboy, Joseph P. Vona of Florida, and Rev. Michael Vona of New Mexico, and his sisters, Sr. Mary Madonna Vona, RSM of Mt. St. Mary's, Watchung, and Frances Kosmoski of Sayreville. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Janet Britton and her husband, Joseph, Sharon Leary and her husband, Timothy, Patrick, Thomas J. and Christopher Vona, Sally Sauter and her husband, Matthew, Kaitlyn and Allison Vona and three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Britton, Nicholas and Daniel Leary. Funeral services are Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at 10 a.m. from The Gundrum Service "Home For Funerals," 237 Bordentown Ave., South Amboy, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, South Amboy. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, South Amboy. Visitation will be on Thursday from 3-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.
