Scott Groeschner Obituary

GROESCHNER Lt. Cmdr Scott E. Groeschner died on Nov 11th, at Army's Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, of injuries received in a bicycling accident in Sevastopol, Ukraine on Nov. 7th. The accident occurred during a port call by USS La Salle and 6th Fleet staff in Sevastopol, Ukraine. He was riding his bicycle with four crew members and was struck by a vehicle. One of the sailors, a Navy Corpsman, administered care on the scene. Groeschner, a Navy Seal, was stabilized at a Ukrainian hospital before being transported to the Medical Center on Nov. 9th. Commissioned in 1991 from Notre Dame ROTC, Groeschner was 36 years old, from Daytona Beach, Fl. He checked aboard the 6th Fleet staff in June 2002. His awards & decorations include: Sea Air & Land Device, Naval Parachutist, Joint Meritorious United Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon: 2 Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal: 2 Southwest Asia Service Medal, Armed Forces Se rvice Medal: 2 Sea Service Deployment Ribbon: 4 Navy Arctic Service Ribbon, United Nations Medal, NATO Medal, Rifle Marksmanship Expert Medal, Pistol Marksmanship Expert Medal and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. Groeschner is survived by his wife, Michelle; parents, John & Marie Groeschner; brother John Jr. & wife Sandy; sister Maria Ramsey & husband Douglas, their children Daniel, Rebecca, Nicole & Angela; grandmother Mary Arruzza; and the following relatives- Ralph & Carlene Arruzza; Sanford Arruzza; Michael & Pam Groeschner, Raymond Groeschner; Janis & Marvin Owens; Lois & Guy Salvatore; Ralph Arruzza III, Debra Heald; Eileen Kaether, Alan Groeschner; Michael Salatore; Morgan Owens; Colin Owens. A Memorial Mass will be held Nov. 19th at 4PM at St. Josephs Historic Catholic Church on Loretta Rd., Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, 322 N. Lauderdale, Memphis, Tn. 38105 or Arnold Palmer's Childrens Hospital 14 14 Kuhl Ave, Orlando, FL 32806.
