Thomas Zimmerman Obituary

ZIMMERMAN Thomas Carskaden Zimmerman died on October 1, 2009 in Austin, Texas. He was born on December 10, 1925 in Severna Park, Maryland, the son of Robert Eugene Zimmerman and Ruth Ray Carskaden Zimmerman. He is survived by his brother, Robert Eugene (Gene) Zimmerman of Houston, Texas and his sister, Mary Elizabeth Zimmerman Pincoffs of Austin, Texas. He was a loving and loved uncle to eight nieces and nephews and to twenty-one grand nieces and nephews, all who survive him. Tom graduated from City College in Baltimore, Maryland and entered Haverford College where he spent two years before his studies were interrupted by World War II. He spent two years in the United States Air Force before returning to college and getting his degree. He later graduated from the Wharton School of Business. Tom was employed by the Commercial Credit Corporation in Baltimore, Maryland and later in Houston, Texas. After a few years, he entered the real estate business and opened his own firm. California beckoned and Tom moved first to San Francisco and then to Napa where he worked for Wells Fargo Bank. On retirement he moved to Lewisburg, West Virginia. For a time he was a part time resident of Amelia Island, Florida and then decided to move there permanently. He moved from Amelia Island to Jacksonville a few years ago and lived there until his final illness. Tom made many wonderful friends in West Virginia and in Florida. Tom belonged to the Palms Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir, serving often as a soloist. He loved music and was an ardent fan of the Jacksonville Symphony. One of the highlights of his life was having the opportunity to serve as a guest conductor. Tom played several instruments by ear including the piano and the trombone. Tom was very convivial - he loved the company of his many friends. He enjoyed swimming, tennis and traveling the world. He was a "snappy dresser", an active dancer and a real fan of the automobile industry. His many family and friends will miss this loving, kind, and generous man. He brought laughter and joy to many. A memorial service will be planned at a future date in Jacksonville, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Palms Presbyterian Church, 3410 S. Third Street Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250 or the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas 78705 (512) 452-8811.
