Victor Sutton Obituary

SUTTON Victor Joseph Sutton, 97, of Jacksonville, FL, died November 28, 2008. Born and educated in Ontario, Canada, he spent his entire business career in the Pulp and Paper Industry. He eventually joined the Bowater Corporation, London, England, an international Pulp and Paper organization and was appointed a Director of this global company in 1964. In North America, he became President of Bowater Incorporated and Chairman and President of Bowater United States Corporation. For a number of years, he was head of all Bowater activities in North America and was one of the most experienced executives in Pulp and Paper technology. In 1971, he was transferred to the Bowater headquarters in London, England, as Director of Worldwide Operations. After retirement, he returned to the U.S. and became an international consultant in the Pulp and Paper Industry. In addition to his responsibilities in the Bowater organization, Mr. Sutton held a number of key positions in business, industry and education. In his Tennessee home area, he served on the Board of Directors of both The Hamilton National Bank and The Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company in Chattanooga. He was also a member of The Board of Visitors of the School of Forestry, Duke University and an Honorary Trustee of Tennessee Weslyn College. His activities in industry were in various associations related to pulp and paper. He was a trustee of the American Forest Institute and held the position of Chairman of the Board of that organization for several years. He was a Director of the American Paper Institute and completed several terms as President of The Southern Executive Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry. When the first Tennessee Pollution Control Board was established in 1967, Mr. Sutton was named a charter member to represent manufacturers. Other activities included memberships on the Board of Governors of both The National Council of the Paper Industry for Air and Stream Improvement and The Tennessee Manufacturers Association. After retirement, the Suttons moved simultaneously to Grandfather Golf and Country Club, Linville, NC, and to Bay Hill, Orlando, FL. Mr. Sutton, also an accomplished violinist, was active in the affairs of the Grandfather Club and the Property Owners Association. He served on the board of the club for a number of years and as its President for three successive terms. He was also a member of the Board of the Forum, Lees-McRae College, and a member of the Advisory Board, Cannon Memorial Hospital. Mr. Sutton is survived by his wife, Virginia; son, David; daughter-in-law, Susan; granddaughters, Kathryn (Max) Painter, Sarah (Trey) Watkins and Caroline (Mason) Cousins; and eight great-grandchildren, all of Memphis, TN. He was preceded in death by his only grandson, David Parks "Dusty" Sutton, Jr. Services will be held privately by the family.
