William Vogeley Obituary

VOGELEY Our dearest husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, William Frederick Vogeley, died at the age of 93 of natural causes on October 26, 2013 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was a Jacksonville resident since 1981. Bill had also lived in Stamford, Connecticut, in Copenhagen, Denmark, in Brightwaters, in Floral Park, in Williston Park, all on Long Island, New York. Bill was born in Queens, New York on August 18, 1920. Left to remember and miss him is his wife Jytte Jay Vogeley of Jacksonville; son, Thomas Vogeley and his wife, Heather, his granddaughters, Christina Vogeley and Samantha Vogeley, their mother, Marjorie Vogeley, his great-grandson, Camden, all of Maryland; son Mark Vogeley and wife, Pamela of New York City, his granddaughter, Anabel Vogeley and grandson, William Vogeley, of Seattle, Washington. Bill retired as captain in the Merchant Marine in 1986. He began his maritime career by first studying navigation on his own, then becoming a cadet at the newly established Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, Long Island, New York, class of 1943. During WW II he sailed on military supplies ships in convoy to Murmansk, Russia and to campaigns in North Africa, Italy and several in the Pacific. He was in Haiphong harbor in 1954 when the Geneva Accords were signed. His ship was chartered to bring military supplies during the Vietnam War. Bill wished his cremains to be spread over the ocean where he worked so many years. His family will honor his wish at a later date with a family gathering on a boat bringing Bill's ashes to the international part of the Atlantic ocean. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com
