Carl-John Marano Chambers, 58, of Wellsboro, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre after a long illness. He was born on January 30, 1967, in Manhattan, New York to Patricia Ann Marano and Carl John Ekblom. Carl attended Bucknell University on a four-year Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship and a Division I wrestling scholarship. On November 11, 1989, he married Karen D. DeCamp, with whom he shared 35 years of loving marriage and two children, Becky and Jack.
Carl served his country in the United States Army as a Platoon Leader and Battery Executive Officer, finishing his career with the rank of captain. He was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in combat operations associated with Operation Desert Storm. After assignments in Germany and Monterey, Calif., he returned to Bucknell University as an ROTC instructor. While there, he completed an MBA. As a certified public accountant (CPA), he worked at Price Waterhouse, Pennypacker & Ziegler, and Citizens & Northern Bank. Most recently, Carl was a vice president at Fulton Bank.
Carl was an avid athlete who enjoyed much success as a four-year member of Bucknell's Division I wrestling team and competed in the Keystone Games as a freestyle wrestler. Carl also enjoyed skiing, playing ice hockey, biking, SCUBA diving, competing in triathlons, boating, fishing, reading, and traveling extensively with his wife and children.
Carl supported his communities in countless ways. He continued to serve his alma mater as a member of the University's Parents Board, Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity Advisory Board, and Grove Society. Carl was also active in his local community in Wellsboro, where he served at various points as the president of Rotary International Wellsboro Chapter, the president of the Wellsboro School Board, an executive member of Growth Resources of Wellsboro and the Wellsboro Education Foundation, a vice president of the Tioga County Chapter of the American Heart Association, a member of the Laurel Health Services Board, a member of the Lycoming Economic Development Board, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wellsboro. True to his love of sport, he devoted time to coaching the Wellsboro Area High School wrestling and soccer teams, as well as local youth baseball and soccer teams.
Carl lived an uncompromising life, and he never-ever-shied away from a challenge. He loved his family and friends unconditionally, and those close to him felt his total devotion every single day. Carl never backed down from adversity, and he was an inspiration to all who walked with him during his courageous battle with his health issues. Carl never stopped being extraordinary, and his unwavering spirit lives on in everyone fortunate enough to know and love him.
Carl is survived by his wife: Karen DeCamp Chambers of Wellsboro; his daughter: Becky Chambers (Jack Derwin) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his son: Jack Chambers of Columbus, Ohio; his mother: Patricia Chambers (Fred Rowe) of Magnolia, Del.; his father: Carl Ekblom (Joan) of Islamorada, Fla.; his brother: Scott Vincent Marano Chambers (Christine) of Manchester, N.H.; his mother and father-in-law: Bob and Diann DeCamp of Wellsboro; his sister-in-law: Sue Zoby (Paul) of Tetonia, Idaho; his brother-in-law: Matt DeCamp (Amy) of Wellsboro; and his many nieces and nephews: Tom Owlett (Brittany); Laura Owlett Harkness (Tom); Bob Owlett (Lizzie); Julia DeCamp; Kate DeCamp; Jenny DeCamp; Nolan Chambers; and T.J. Chambers. He was preceded in death by his stepfather: Brian Chambers.
Friends and family are invited to pay tribute to Carl's life at a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 3 at Rooke Chapel on the Bucknell University campus in Lewisburg. A military internment at the Lewisburg Cemetery and a reception will follow. The service will be livestreamed.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Packer Park Pool Renovation Fund. Carl believed swimming is an essential skill to enjoy life on the water, and he supported the Packer Park Pool's role as a community hub.
