DR. JOHN R. MCCARTHY JR.

Dr. John R. McCarthy Jr, 60 of Wyomissing passed away Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015, in his residence.
He was a loving and devoted husband of Janey L (Horning) Iaccarino McCarthy, whom he married May 31, 2014. Born in Wellsboro, he was the son of John R., Sr., and Victoria (Vaganos) McCarthy of Wellsboro.
John was a graduate of Wellsboro High School. John was employed by Kutztown University as the Associate Dean of College of Education. Prior, he was Assistant Dean at the University of New York and Oswego for accreditation and assessment where he coordinated preparation for National Council for Accreditation of teacher education and was a key participate in the University's Middle States Accreditation preparations. Prior to this appointment, John served as the Director for the Office of Program Evaluation and Assessment at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology, where he was lead author and developer of institutional (medical college) longitudinal student learning outcome assessment plan.
John held a doctorate in leadership in higher education with certification in program evaluation, from the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education of the University of Rochester. He earned his Master of Science Degree in Special Education and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Mansfield University.
He was an avid sports fan which included holding seasonal tickets for the Baltimore Orioles and spent a number of years coaching and mentoring his athletes in various communities where he lived. John's life and work was inspired and enriched by his epicurean pleasures including wine touring and travel. He was an avid supporter of the ever growing culinary community which greatly influenced his eldest son.
In addition to his wife, he was a loving and devoted father to his children, Kylen McCarthy of Brooklyn N.Y., Brianna McCarthy, fiancé of Sean Novin of York, Kelsey McCarthy of York, Kerry McCarthy, husband of Amy of York; step-children, Dino Iaccarino, husband of Jill of Laureldale, Desiree, wife of Jason Weyforth of Lancaster, Danielle, wife of Jesse Bagans of Sinking Spring. He is also survived by siblings, Caprice McCarthy of Mansfield, Shalane, wife of Steve Gee of Mansfield; 11 grandchildren and mother-in-law, Ruth B. Horning of Lititz.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 3, at 3 p.m., in Grace Fellowship Church, 622 Old Lancaster Pike, Shillington. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m., in the church. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, an Educational Scholarship fund has been set up for a Wellsboro Senior High School Student in memory of John.
