David Cathers Obituary

David B. Cathers

David B. Cathers, 55, of Lehighton, passed away on Wednesday morning, Feb. 26, 2025.

Born on July 16, 1969, to William W. Cathers III and Doris M. Jones, David was a graduate of Central Bucks East High School in Doylestown. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice from Moravian College in Bethlehem.

In 1994, he married Lisa Lynne Whitener, and together they built a life centered on faith, family and service.

David was a dedicated combat veteran who honorably served in the U.S. Army from May 1996 to April 2015, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Over the course of his distinguished career, he deployed twice to Afghanistan, demonstrating exceptional leadership, courage and dedication to his fellow soldiers. His service was recognized with numerous commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), the Army Commendation Medal (4th Award), and the Army Achievement Medal (4th Award). Additionally, he was awarded the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, the Army Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Korea Defense Service Medal (2nd Award). David's unwavering commitment to his country and brothers-in-arms left a lasting impact on all who served alongside him.

Following his military career, David continued his life of service as a Samaritan's Purse disaster relief volunteer and an active member of Ebenezer Evangelical Congregational Church. Known for his steadfast faith in Jesus Christ, his tireless work ethic, and his boundless generosity, he dedicated himself to helping those in need. His kindness, humility, and selflessness were evident in every aspect of his life, touching the hearts of countless individuals.

David is survived by his beloved children, David J. Cathers and John D. Cathers; his mother, Doris M. Sandford (Harold Sandford); his brothers, Brian L. Cathers (Patti Cathers) and Glen R. Cathers (Alyssa Cathers); his sister, Pamela J. Tsang (Allan Tsang); and many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins. His legacy of service, love, and unwavering dedication to others will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

Service: A Celebration of Life service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at Ebenezer Evangelical Congregational Church, 441 Center Ave., Jim Thorpe, PA 18229. Military honors will be rendered at his graveside at Doylestown Cemetery, 215 E Court St, Doylestown, PA 18901. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in David's name to support funeral expenses (checks payable to Melber Funeral Home can be mailed to Ebenezer ECC Church), Samaritan's Purse, Voice of the Martyrs, International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, or Brother's Keeper Veterans Foundation.

DAVID and I met at Ft.Hood, TX. at the Wounded Warrior Unit. We had many Bible studies outside and it was awesome to share time and conversations with Dave. He shared the Lord with many other soldiers as well. " Your sleep will be short Dave, and Christ will welcome you home to an eternal paradise" Amen and Amen

Dave was a very special man... he helped my Dad with his lawn and shoveling. I was always interested in him and I stopped h one day to thank him for everything he did. He asked me out and we went out for a little bit but my busy life with little kids came first. I'm sorry I didn't get to know him better than what I did. Thoughts and prayers to all of his family members . He's a VERY special person! God love him and rest his soul!
