Edward Charles Shober Sr., 83, died peacefully in his home in New Castle, PA, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, June 22, 2014. Born in Summit Hill, he was the son of the late James J. and Anna (Dougherty) Shober. The husband of Beverly (Carr) Ryan Shober, he was predeceased by his first wife, Marie (Slaby) Shober.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly; sons, Edward Jr. (Virginia Depos), of Phoenix, AZ, and David, D.O. (Michele Schons, D.O.), of Pulaski, PA; daughters, Mary Jean Potylycki (Jeffrey), of Whitehall, Anne Krause (Randy), of Orefield, Joan Hydro (Thomas), of Hudson, MA, and Patricia LoCicero (Anthony III) of Fairport, N.Y.; stepchildren, Anne Galmarini (Jeff), of New Castle, Wayne Ryan (Lynne Borowiak), of New Castle, Adele Scheppner (Mark), of New Wilmington, Lawrence County, and Lisa Williams (Robert) of Pulaski. He is survived by 14 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by siblings John of Allentown, Joan Danielwicz of Maple Shade, N.J., Anne Heffelfinger of Coplay, Verna Patuka of Center Valley; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by siblings Margaret O'Brien Crampsie, James, Marion Bonner, Robert and Thomas.
A 1948 graduate of Lansford High School, he was recognized as an All-State football player.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1948-52 as a sergeant in the U.S. Constabulary Company A of the 14th Constabulary R.C.T Regiment in Germany. There he continued his football career as the starting center on the Regimental football team for four years. They won the EUCOM championship in 1949. He was on the All-EUCOM team.
In 2008, he was inducted into the Carbon County Area Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
He was employed by the PA Bureau of Forest & Waters and the Department of Environmental Resources from 1959-1986 working on flood control projects and the development of Pennsylvania State Parks.
A devout Roman Catholic, he served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister.
He served on the Advisory Board of Marian Catholic High School in Hometown, and was an avid fan of the Marian Colts.
He was a longtime member of the Lansford AmVets, Barracuda Club, the Summit Hill American Legion, and St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Summit Hill. He was a current member of Saint Camillus de Lellis Catholic Church in New Castle.
Service: A viewing in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Summit Hill, on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, from 4-8 p.m., and on Thursday, June 26, 2014, 9:30-10:30 a.m. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. followed by a military burial at SS. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery, Nesquehoning.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Camillus Building Fund; the Marie and Edward Shober Memorial Fund at Marian High School; or the charity of your choice.
