Ernest Christman Obituary

Ernest P. Christman

Ernest P. "Reds" Christman of Lehighton passed away on Jan. 10, 2026. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Born to the late Ernest and Pauline (Goldbach) Christman, Ernest was known throughout his lifetime as "Reds."

He shared 63 years of marriage with his devoted wife, Gail (Mertz) Christman, celebrating that milestone this past September. Their life together was built on love, loyalty and an unwavering commitment to family.

Ernest retired in 2001 from Mack Trucks after many years of dedicated service. Following his retirement, he continued working several years as an inspector, overseeing municipal sewer line installations, a role that reflected his strong work ethic and attention to detail.

A proud U.S. Marine veteran, Ernest carried his military discipline, values and sense of duty throughout his life. That foundation shaped how he approached work, family and community.

Ernest was an avid hunter and enjoyed golfing and traveling, but no pastime ever rivaled the importance of his family. He was always present, helping with projects, attending sporting events and school activities, and creating lasting memories on family trips, especially vacations to Disney World. He also took great pride in maintaining a beautiful yard and was always willing to lend a hand to friends and neighbors.

A devout Catholic, Ernest attended Mass faithfully until declining health and mobility made it no longer possible.

He is survived by his loving wife, Gail; his sons, Bradley Christman, husband of Angela, and Barry Christman, husband of Connie; his daughter, Bethann Christman; grandchildren, Nicole Newhard, Brandie Husar, Cole, Cameron, Hannah and Abigail Christman; stepgrandchildren, Michael and Matthew Shupp, Joseph and Luke Blauch; and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of great pride and joy. He is also survived by his sisters, Patricia Schapell and Mary, wife of George Andrew; brothers, John Christman, husband of Hazel, and Richard Christman; and 15 nieces and nephews.

The family extends deepest gratitude to staff at Maple Shade Meadows for love and care given to our husband and father for the 19 months he was a resident at their home away from home.

Services: A Memorial of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 360 S. Third St., Lehighton, with the Rev. Christopher M. Zelonis officiating. Military honors will follow under the direction of the Lehighton UVO. Schaeffer Funeral Home, Lehighton, has been entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SS. Peter and Paul Church or Carbon Co. Animal Shelter, 63 Broad St., Nesquehoning, PA 18240. Online condolences may be made at www.schaefferfunerals.com.
