Joseph Micko Obituary

Joseph Micko

Joseph Micko passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at his lifelong residence on Pine Street in Jim Thorpe.

He was born Feb. 26, 1952, the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Pina) Micko. He was a stellar athlete in his youth being a five time inductee into the Jim Thorpe Sports Hall of Fame.

Joe was a 1970 graduate of Jim Thorpe High School, where he was part of the 1966, 1967 and 1969 Championship Football Teams and the 1969-70 Championship Wrestling Team. He was recruited by a number of colleges, but chose Bloomsburg State where he again played football for four years and wrestled for two. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He worked at Bethlehem Steel for the majority of his career and considered himself a strong activist for union rights.

He was a member of a number local clubs, but his beloved Mauch Chunk Rod and Gun Club stands out. He was vigorous in his support of the Carbon County Democrats, where he devoted much time volunteering on the their behalf.

Joe was predeceased by a sister, Joann. He is survived by his cousin, Carole Micko Fisher; his classmates from the JTHS Class of 1970; his teammates; and a multitude of acquaintances who quickly became dear friends.

I played football with Joe at Bloomsburg. He was a good guy. While l lost touch over the years I think back to those day frequently. Joe was a real hustler and blocker.

Joe was a good friend and fraternity brother of Zeta Psi. While teammates at Bloomsburg he got me to join the fraternity. He is remembered as a very positive person who was supportive of many community endeavors in and around Jim Thorpe.

Every time I pick up a comic book, I think of you. I remember speaking in your room to "borrow" a couple to read. You never got mad at me.. Thank you for letting my imagination grow!!!
