Metra R. Heisler, 94, of Mechanicsburg and formerly of Lewistown Valley, died Thursday in Mechanicsburg.
A registered nurse, she worked at the Harrisburg State Hospital for a short time, then became a nurse missionary for the Evangelical Brethern Church in Sierra Leon, Africa. After retiring, she accepted a professorship at Lenoir-Rhine College in North Carolina.
Born in the Lewistown Valley, she was a daughter of the late Warren J. and Edna P. (Frantz) Heisler.
She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Lewistown Valley.
A 1937 graduate of Tamaqua High School, she graduated from the Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. Prior to her misionary work, she studied midwifery in England.
Surviving are three sisters, Eleanor Trefsger in Watsontown, Gladys, wife of Richard Cook of Lemoyne and Ruth, wife of Lewis Reisinger of Newark, Del.; a borther, Miles Heisler and his wife, Eleanor, of Milton; several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Curtis Heisler and Marlin Heisler.
Service: 11 a.m., Thursday, Calvary UM Church, Lewistown valley, with the Revs. Ed Bean and Sunny Stock officiating. Interment, parish cemetery. Call 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Zizelmann-Roche Funeral Home, 500 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, or 10-11 a.m. Thursday in the church.
