I am heartbroken to learn of Scott's passing. I didn't know he'd been ill and can't imagine what this family's journey has been like. I dated Scott when he was stationed in Milton, West Virginia. He introduced me to John Updike and I introduced him to West Virginia culture. We kept in touch for quite a few years and I regret not continuing to do so. Scott was sweet, thoughtful and brilliant. I know you miss him, so.

I have been searching on vain, since I heard the news of Scott's untimely passing, to put into words how grateful I am that the adversity of ALS caused his path and mine to incongrously cross in our lifetimes. He touched and inspired me in countless ways through his quiet but indomitable life force, his sparkling keen intelligence humbly cloaked in modest affability, his gentle sense of humor, and his breathtaking courage battling an implacably cruel disease to well beyond a draw, but rather to a hands-down sustained victory by Scott. (I would be most remiss if I did not express my respect and wonder for Scott's family who helped him triumph so long beyond the most optimistic expectations). Scott put himself on the line contributing his time, energy and concern for others to add to the fund of ALS knowledge so others may benefit. To quote the Beatles, "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make". Shall we say, St. Peter may need to widen his gate when Scott and his endless trainload of love arrive to pass through! Scott will forever walk by my side at every future Lehigh Valley ALS Walk. His quiet kindness and steadfast support to other persons with ALS (PALS) and their families only adds to his greatness. I will always remember the look of pure joy on the face of his true comrade in arms, Richard, when he spotted Scott walking through the front door of Center Valley Barnes & Noble for Richard's book signing. Scott understood the importance of specifically his being there to bear witness (no one else would have done), so despite unimaginable physical difficulty, Scott would have been absolutely nowhere else. I treasure Scott's Facebook posts to me, most recently the best Christmas greeting I received last year, Scott forever linked in and forward looking through and through. Wished I'd have known Scott before ALS, but what I witnessed in him was the noblest and absolute best one could ever encounter in another human being. My life has been indelibly influenced for the better, and has been blessed, just for having known Scott.

I am so sorry to read about Scott's early death. I only knew him in my classroom and remember how much I enjoyed him and his siblings in my science classes.

While I did not know Scott or his family, I express my deepest sympathy in your loss. My dad battled ALS for 2 short years before passing away 16 years ago. ALS is a horrible disease that we need to find a cure for. So many families suffer the way ours did, yet so many families find support in the ALS community. Every May, there is an ALS walk somewhere in PA and throughout the US. My kids and I participate in the Bloomsburg ALS Walk, better known as Walk to Defeat ALS. I invite you to use this as a way to raise awareness to help other families still suffering. God Bless

God Bless the DeWire family, friends, and health care workers who took care of him during his battle with ALS. He will be sorely missed. Thank you Scott for keeping in touch. It was a blessing to me. Rest In Peace my friend in the arms of our Lord.
