Alan Booth Obituary

TUCSON - Alan Dibble Booth, a longtime Owens Corning executive who had a passion for hockey and golf, died Wednesday in Casa de la Luz Hospice, Tucson. He was 71.

Mr. Booth, who had lived nearly year-round in Tuscon since his wife Lorine's death in 2002, died from complications of lung cancer, his daughter, Katie Booth, said.

He was employed by Owens Corning in Toledo for 31 years, starting as a sales trainee in 1967 and working his way through the ranks to vice president of marketing and sales in manufacturer and mechanical products in 1986 and retiring as head of the insulation division for North America.

He was born in Chicago on Feb. 28, 1943, to John and Mary Booth. He grew up in Danbury, Conn., attended Eaglebrook School, Governor Drummer Academy, and Williams College.

He served as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Katie Booth said her father traveled widely both for his employer and for pleasure with his wife, including trips to China and Scotland.

A longtime resident of Ottawa Hills and later Maumee, he was an active member of Toledo Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf. Hockey also was a favorite pastime.

Both a high school and college hockey player, Ms. Booth said her father helped organize and coach the boys' hockey team at Ottawa Hills High School.

His longtime friend, Skip Gardner, said the two met on an ice rink and began a friendship that included playing hockey for about three decades.

His company, Gardner's Signs, "sponsored a team for a lot of years, and it was a pretty good team," Mr. Gardner said. "Al and I were the oldest guys on the team."

He recalled traveling with Mr. Booth to Lake Placid to play in a world senior tournament a couple of years.

"I think the first year we won it and the second year we didn't win a game," he recalled with a laugh.

Mr. Booth, he said, "was a great guy. He was aggressive and competitive [on the ice] and he loved to hit a backhand shot. That was his favorite shot."

Ms. Booth said her father enjoyed people. "He was quick to make friends," she said. "He was very generous. He had a great sense of humor."

Surviving are his daughters, Stacey and Katie Booth; his twin brother, Peter Booth, and sister, Karen Hutchison.

Adair Funeral Home in Tucson is handling arrangements. A service is to be held later in Beeville, Texas.

Although I only met Alan for a brief time in Hyannis in the 1960's I will always remember his upbeat nature. I have a small photo of him standing in front of the cottage 6 of us inhabited that summer. I am always going to remember fondly those that crossed my path in our youth and in our age group. Those were the days and so fleeting! RIP Alan.

How could I forget a boy I met on Cape Cod in the summer of 1963? Just a chance meeting, and what a "nice boy" he was, and such a relief from the chaos on the Cape that summer. He was well mannered, good natured and just a neat person. That is the kind of indelible impression that we hope we all can leave. Thank you, Alan!

Alan will always remain a very fond memory for me, after only meeting him briefly in the summer of 1963 in Hyannis, MA. He had come up to the Cape for the weekend from Connecticut. He left this life too soon, but it looks like he left behind deep and fond memories. What a gift.

Alan, was a mentor to me in my early days at Owens Corning and his example served my lifetime there after. He gave me what would become my first examples of pure leadership. He would probably have to think hard of working with me in the mid eighties because I was only a service to his division. He made me feel welcome and as though I was something special to his group. I have remembered him all these years and was wondering about him. Although I have discovered he has passed he is still very much apart of me. God bless you Alan!

I met Alan during the summer of 1963 on Cape Cod. It was a wonderful summer, with so many young people just beginning their lives. I have a photo of him taken outside the cottage where 6 of us were staying. I remember him as a really nice guy.

I am sorry for his loss.

I had just recently heard of Albie's passing earlier this year. Coach Booth was great to play for. He was a coach on our first hockey team at Ottawa Hiils. He was good to me and the players responded to him. That wasn't a championship team or anything, but it was a solid team that won its' share of games. Great Coach and a good guy to be around.

Too soon! "Albie" was one of my Governor Dummer Academy classmates that I always wished I'd been able to stay closer in touch with as we grew older. We only saw each other at a few class reunions. At GDA he was a good friend, a fine athlete, and a real gentleman. I'll miss him and send my condolences to his family and friends.

I knew Albie during our four years at Governor Dummer Academy where he was liked and admired by everyone on campus. I only saw him occasionally after we graduated, but he was always the same all-around good guy then that he was at school. May God rest his kind soul.

I had the opportunity to work for Alan at OC and what a pleasure. He was a caring and sensitive person and treated his employees in a respectful manner. He seemed to always have a smile on his face and positive attitude. He was a like a bull in china shop, in a fun way, but always got the job done. He was a good person and may God be with him and his family. Thanks for letting me learn from you and being a part of my working life. Our God be with us all. Edward Ahlfors

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad's passing.... he was such a great, great guy and he is a part of many of my childhood memories. I will always remember him with that big smile and laugh and the joy of friendship that he brought to my Dad.
The last few years with my Dad were hard on many of his friends as it was difficult to see him in the state that he was in. Your Dad always made a point to see him or talk to him which was not easy.... Your Dad's unwavering friendship meant to world to all of us and somewhere in my Dad's head, he knew Albee was always there.
I will keep you all in my heart always...
Love and hugs,
Jule

We had lots of fun and laughs with your Dad and Mom over the years. Albie went to 2 National Championship football games with my boys and I. Those are memories we will always cherish.
He will now be back with your Mom which is where he wanted to be.
Katie and Stacey if there is anything we can do to help you get through this please let us know.

Stacey, Katie & Peter,
My sincerest condolences on the passing of your father/brother.
Albie, as he was endearingly nicknamed in prep school, was a very good friend, whose father and my father were classmates and glee club members together at Dartmouth many, many years ago. He was an excellent student and tough athlete at both Eaglebrook School and Governor Dummer Academy, where he was a starter and leader in football, hockey and baseball. He also was a fun-loving guy, who was full of mischief (mostly harmless) and liked by all. Also, I know that he was successful both in college at Williams and in his business career with Owens Corning. Although I did not see him much over the past several years, I will still miss him dearly.
Warmest regards,

John Zaloudek

Stacey and Katie - What a privilege it was to have your dad's friendship and work with him for so many years. His personality and leadership style fostered cohesive organizations focused on getting the job done and having fun doing it - and we did! Albie will indeed be missed by those of us in his Owens Corning family, and my thoughts are with you and your family as you go through this difficult time.

Stacey and Katie, your Dad and Mom touched the lives of too many people to count and always in an endearing way. Katie, you were in diapers and Stacey not far ahead when they taught Linda and I the game of Yahtzee in 1973 on their living room floor in Holliston, MA. It was the beginning of a wonderful relationship. We will miss his infectious laugh and good humor. No one could sing "Boni Maroni" or "Hey Jude" like Albie at the drop of a hat! Our hearts go out to you and your Uncle Peter and Aunt Judy.

How many best friends do I have that go back some 57 years. Not too many and certainly none of them could match the Albie with his great caring ways and yearly visits to catch up on our lives. Only 6 more days until his birthday!!!!!!! I already miss him beyond words.

Hugs to Stacey and Katie,
