Although I hadn't seen Al since college days, I would like to tell his family what a kind and honorable man he was, always in search of the spiritual. He was in my Karate class and rose quickly to assistant instructor. I am so sorry for your loss, I am not surprised that he became a great educator, and that his heart only grew larger with time.

The TOLEDO EXCEL family would like to extend its most heartfelt condolences to the Flores family. Mr. Flores was an ardent supporter of the EXCEL program, both as an EXCEL parent and as a longstanding member of the TOLEDO EXCEL Joint Committee. His help with steering the direction of the program over the years, along with other Joint Committee members, was crucial to our mission of helping underrepresented students achieve their goals and successfully complete college. We would also like to acknowledge and thank him for the decades he spent as an educator for TPS. And finally, we would like to say what a pleasant and wonderful man he was to be around on a personal level. Every member of our staff who had contact with Mr. Flores remembers him as a kind, generous, funny and personable man who was always willing to commit his time an energy for the greater good.

Whenever I was around Al I realized I was in the presence of a giant. Not because of his height, but because of the depth and breadth of the impact he had on his students and the entire community. He was a valued member of the Upward Bound faculty at the University of Toledo and an outstanding member of the Board for UT's TOLEDO EXCEL Program. It was an honor for me to refer to him as a colleague. Al will be greatly missed, my prayers go out to the Flores family.

I met Al as a teenager and when I saw no future for myself in college Al saw something different. He brought me to his home and walked me through the college application process, filled out my FAFSA, as well as many scholarship applications. If not for him I would have never gone to college. I graduated from BGSU 4 years later with a degree in Political Science, and after being given the tools and encouragement I accomplished many goals. And it all started right there in his home at his kitchen table filling out paperwork that I, nor my parents, would have otherwise ever even looked at. Since then as a close friend of the family Al has continued to teach me many lessons and provided me with guidance in all areas of life. Al was an role model and an inspiration to all who knew him. I am honored to have been as close to him and his amazing family. To his children Antolin, Benjamin, and Sarah your dad will forever live in the memories you have and everything he has taught you. Your children will each carry a piece of him as they grow under the same moral code and values that he gave to you. I know he will be watching down on you and your family through all of lifes moments.
