ANDERSON
Andrew E.
Andrew E. Anderson, 95, passed away on February 8, 2016, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio after a brief illness. Andy was born in Marquette, Michigan on July 6, 1920. As a youth, he lived in Ewen, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula, and worked on a ferry boat transporting passengers and cars across the Straits of Mackinac, prior to the construction of the Mackinac Bridge.
He graduated from University of Michigan, Phi Beta Kappa, with a Bachelor's Degree in 1942. After graduation he immediately enlisted in the US Army and served from 1942 to 1945. Upon discharge he married Sarah Malone in 1945, in Mississippi, and they immediately moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where he attended law school at the University of Michigan. While in law school, he was a member and editor of the Michigan Law Review. He graduated second in his class in 1948. Within a week of graduation he and Sarah moved to Toledo, Ohio, and Andy began working at the Law Firm of Doyle, Lewis & Warner. He passed both the Michigan and the Ohio Bar exams while working at Doyle, Lewis & Warner and became a partner of that firm. In 1960 he took a job as a trust officer at First National Bank of Toledo (now Fifth Third Bank). He eventually became a Senior Vice President and General Legal Counsel in charge of the Trust and Legal Departments for the bank. He also taught tax law courses at night at the University of Toledo Law School in the 1960's. In 1970 he left the bank to become a partner at Spengler, Nathanson, Heyman McCarthy & Durfee (now Spengler Nathanson P.L.L.). He practiced in the area of trusts/estates and estate planning as well as banking law. He was also a member of the Management Committee and served as Managing Partner for a number of years, retiring in the early 1990's.
During his career, he was President of the Toledo Jr. Bar Association (1957) and the Toledo Bar Association (1971). He was awarded the Order of the Heel in 1966 by the Toledo Jr. Bar Association. Andy is one of only a handful of individuals in the history of the Toledo Bar Association to be honored by serving as President of both the Toledo Jr. Bar Association and the Toledo Bar Association as well as to receive the Order of the Heel from the Toledo Jr. Bar Association. He was a longtime member of the Toledo Club, Highland Meadows Golf Club, Epworth United Methodist Church, the University of Toledo Presidents Club, the University of Michigan Alumni Association, American Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association and Toledo Bar Association. He was also a Trustee of the France Stone Foundation. Andy's many interests included attending UT men's basketball games for many years with his wife, Sarah, and friends, Joe and Ginnie Heyman, playing golf with Sarah and friends, playing cards with his friends and exercising daily at The Toledo Club. He also enjoyed traveling to many countries with Sarah and their friends. He was particularly close with the late judge John Potter, a former neighbor and fellow Michigan law school graduate.
Andy was a man of integrity and intelligence who always kept his word. He loved his family and he attended many events involving his children and grandchildren. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always calm in the eye of the storm. He was also very considerate of others. He was a wonderful and dedicated son, husband, father and grandfather as well as a loyal friend to a number of his fellow attorneys, neighbors, clients and other friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah; parents, Andrew M. Anderson and Florence Anderson; brothers, William and Clifford; great-niece, Christina Marie Hollenbeck. He is survived by his children, Mary Anderson (Jack Ahern), Jim Anderson (Kathy Anderson), Bob Anderson and Sue Ogle (Dr. Martin Ogle); three grandchildren, Christine Ahern, Catherine Ahern and Andrew Anderson; step-grandchildren, John Bland and Christie Hofmann; niece, Bonnie Hollenbeck (Don); great-nephews, Gary, Ron, Kip and Kerry Hollenbeck.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Swan Creek Retirement Village and The Toledo Club for all of their kindness.
There will be a celebration of Andy's life on February 17, 2016, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at The Toledo Club, 235 14th St., Toledo, Ohio. Friends are invited to come and share their memories of this wonderful man. Interment will be private. Anyone wishing to honor Andy's life is asked to consider The Toledo Club Fund at the Toledo Community Foundation, 300 Madison Ave., Ste. 1300 Toledo, Ohio, 43604.

What a great friend he was. I met him through Dad(the late Charlie Brown) and grew to really respect him. I can remember going to several TU basketball games because of his kindness. R.I.P. Mr. Anderson. It's well deserved.
