Anthony Anderson Obituary

ANDERSON Anthony J. "Tony" Anthony J. "Tony" Anderson, age 51, of Oxford, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 5, 2008. He is survived by his wife Debbie; his daughter, Meghan (Eli) Roth, and sons, Brian and Matt; as well as stepdaughter, Emily Bystrom and stepson, Seth Bystrom. From 1997 until 2005, Tony was a special-ed teacher in the Talawanda School District in Oxford. More recently, he was a self-employed home remodeler. Tony was an avid mountain biker who in recent years regularly spent his free time with friends and family members on his bike and had been making annual treks to Utah and other sites renowned for their great mountain bike trails. He was a regular on the trails at Hueston Woods State Park where he died doing what he loved. Over the years, Tony assisted in the building of several Habitat for Humanity homes in Oxford. He was a member of IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association) and could frequently be found performing maintenance on the biking trails at Hueston Woods State Park. Tony grew up in Maumee, Ohio but has resided in Oxford since 1975. He amused all who knew him with his unique brand of humor. He was also known for his love of family, for the great affection he had for his many young nephews and nieces and others, and for his seemingly bottomless heart. He will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to know him. Tony is also survived by his mother, Mary Pat Anderson of Maumee, Ohio; sisters, Mary, Molly (Mike) McCartney, Janet (Terry) Schoen, Ellen (Tom) Carr, Kitty (Ken) Judy, and Angel (Dave) Finck and brothers, Andy (Bec), Matt (Kate), Ted, Fritz (Lori), Alex (Maureen), and Tom (Marisi); as well as many aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews. Tony was preceded in death by his first wife, Jenny; his father, Tom Anderson, and his grand-parents, Carl and Mary Adamshick and Harold and Margaret Anderson. Visitation for Tony will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Smith & Ogle Funeral Home, 5086 College Corner Pike in Oxford, on Thursday, October 9, with a memorial service immediately following at 4:00 p.m. at the same site. The family requests that donations be made to Oxford Habitat for Humanity or IMBA. www.smithoglefuneralhome.com

Dear Debbie,
I was a classmate of Tony's at St. Johns High School in Toledo and we graduated together. He was a very good friend of mine in high school and I'm sorry we never were able to get together since we live so close. I don't know if he ever mentioned it, but in the 70's Tony and I took a trip together to Mexico City to visit relatives of mine. We had a wonderful time. I will certainly miss Tony and will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

I babysat "Meggy" in 1983 when all "Tone" talked about at the Bagel Shop was how much he loved her and her mother. What big blue eyes you had as a baby, Meghan! Tony used to bring Jenny chocolate b/c she loved it. Tony was definitely a family man! :) Monica Mission Viejo, CA

Debbie,
I think we have been in shock since we heard Monday night. Bob and I have known Tony for most of the years he has lived in Oxford. We saw him a lot less than the early years when our children were young. Our kids loved him.

In the early years he would talk about wanting to be a teacher. I frequently told him he would make a good teacher and should go for it. I was so glad he did.

The last time we spent any significant time together was when we were on the Together committee to try to unify the district. Stewart school was still around and we met there with Dr. Shriver and some others. Since then we have only seen one another to say "hi."

Hopefully Bob will see you at the visitation and be able to share his conversation with Tony at last Friday's football game.

We met Tony about 12 years ago when we moved from Bloomington, IN to Oxford. Our new home had no bookcases and we arrived with boxes and boxes of books. We asked around and Tony was highly recommended. He had wonderful suggestions and did an excellent job. Always enjoyed seeing him with Strudel and Oyster. We will miss him.

This is such a shock. The day seems empty now (I didn’t know that Tony had passed away until a colleague told me a few minutes ago). Diana and I send our heartfelt condolences to Debbie and to Tony’s whole family. I met Tony in 1995 when we moved to Oxford and he became my favorite student in the first class I taught at Miami. Diana and I made frequent use of Tony’s woodworking skills: I'm typing this next to a computer stand that Tony built for me that first semester, our dining room table was one of his later projects, and he tried to fix a very wobbly work table that I built (after he nearly passed-out laughing at the pitiful job I had done). With all of his biking in recent years he looked as “fit as a butcher’s dog” (a British phrase). Tony had a great sense of humor . . . what a thoroughly nice man . . . I’m so sorry. What a loss.

Tony was such a fixture in Oxford that it is difficult to remember that he wasn't a native. I remember hanging out and talking music at the music store, begging him to build my kitchen table and chairs that are now 21 years old, having fun times at our True Value Store, selling his house when I was a Realtor and the mutual support we gave each other through our loses. I know after we lost Les that the moments are so surreal, but to Debbie and family, I want to assure you that men like Les and Tony leave us with such a legacy and wonderful memories that somehow carry us through. God Bless,

On our first Halloween in Oxford, we answered our door, and there was a smiling clown (Tony), in full costume complete with big feet, big nose and make-up, pushing Meghan in her stroller, dressed just like Tony. We knew then that this was a clown we wanted to get to know better. And we did, to our great benefit. He was unique, he was a great friend, and we will think about him fondly and often.

Tony was a great friend to all who had the opportunity to meet him. Tony touched my life in multiple ways and always made time to make an annual trip to Colorado to ride. Sometimes we had a group and other times it was just the two of us traveling the western US together. I will carry our memories with me forever.
Tony will be greatly missed by all.
