Benjamin Hillard Obituary

Benjamin Marcus Hillard

Ben's kind and gentle spirit will reside in so many of us that he left behind. He was loved and cared for by his parents, children, siblings, relatives, and so many friends. He touched many lives in so many different ways.

Ben loved words. Books were his best friend. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed in-depth conversations about all kinds of topics, especially history and current events, as well as political and government policies. He knew the Bible extensively, and would discuss recipes, memorabilia, T.V. plots, the economy, and just about anything else according to who he was engaging with. He made a point of being inclusive, especially to those who needed love and support. He could talk to anyone.

He was a champion debater in high school at St. Francis, and went on with debate scholarships at the University of Kentucky, and also Wayne State University. He absolutely loved debating and coaching. Ben traveled cross country to participate in many national tournaments. He would tutor many others who requested it, and helped them accomplish their goals.

Ben also enjoyed cooking. He was an accomplished family chef, and worked in many local restaurants, learning new concepts and supporting himself.

He also loved dogs, playing card games, creative writing, and the great outdoors.

He passed away on December 5th, at St. Anne's Hospital, from a pulmonary embolism. He leaves behind his beloved children, Jordyn and Aidan Whitley; parents, Mark and Ann Hillard; siblings, Emily (Horst) Oberder, Sam (Karen) Hillard, and Susannah (Ryan Rees) Hillard. His beloved daughter, Gracie; revered grandparents; and former wife, Jessica Whitey, preceded him in death.

He loved all of his nieces dearly, and always took pride in their many accomplishments. Uncles, Bruce (Lucinda) and Scott Hillard; cousins, relatives, and friends from all walks of life encouraged and supported him throughout his life and struggles. Thank you to Gil and Maria Whitely; his nurses; his counselor; neighbors, and many friends.

Services will be held at Reeb Funeral Home in Sylvania, Ohio, on Saturday, December 14, 2024, with the interment to follow at Toledo Memorial Park, also in Sylvania, Ohio. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., with the service to follow at 12:00 p.m. Pastor Mike Henderson, a long-time friend and counselor, will be officiating. Donations in Ben's memory can be made to Laborers for Christ Ministries c/o Transforming Youth. Online condolences to

Such an outstanding person, and so respected in national debate circles -- coming from University of Kentucky one of the very top, all time programs in the nation.
