Brian Hoeflinger Obituary

HOEFLINGER

Brian

Brian Nicholas Hoeflinger, 18, of Ottawa Hills, OH, died unexpectedly February 2, 2013. Brian was a senior at Ottawa Hills High School, with aspirations of attending the University of North Carolina and becoming an orthodontist one day. Brian was born in Rochester, New York, where he lived until age 4 1/2 and his family moved back to Toledo, OH. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Sylvania, where he graduated from 8th grade. He then attended St. John's Jesuit High School for three years, where he excelled academically, achieving a 4.5 GPA. He was also on the varsity golf team at SJJHS. After three years at St. John's, he decided he wanted to go outside his comfort zone and try something new, thus transferring to Ottawa Hills High School his senior year. Once again, Brian excelled academically and, in addition, became a member of the varsity golf team, which went to state finals. More importantly, Brian became part of the Green Bear Nation and was loved by many.

Brian had great love, for his family and friends, for animals, for a beautiful sunset. He loved playing golf, spending time with his friends, going out for a good dinner and his dogs, Nautica and Ellie. He was proud of his accomplishments but he had a great compassion for others. He always felt other people's pain and empathized with their feelings. He had a deep faith that many may not have known about and that he was just beginning to express. Brian was a very upbeat person and no matter what mood you were in, he always found a way to make a person laugh. His new friends at Ottawa Hills nicknamed him, "Goofy" because of this quirky side of his personality. Brian loved all sports and enjoying supporting his school, especially girl's basketball.

Brian is survived by his parents, Cindy and Brian Hoeflinger; his brother, Kevin (15); his sisters, Julie (14) and Christie (11); his maternal grandmother, Joanne Burroughs; aunt, Inga Hoeflinger Block (Mike); uncles, Teddy (Robin), Wes "George" and Eric and cousins, Katherine and Erik Block. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ingrid and Theodore Hoeflinger and Eldon Burroughs; as well as his uncle, James Burroughs.

Brian will be greatly missed by everyone; his mission on Earth is completed.

"A heart of gold stopped beating, two shining eyes at rest. God broke our hearts to prove that he only takes the best." Rest in Peace, Brian Nicholas Hoeflinger.

Visitation will be at Hoeflinger- Bolander Funeral Home, 3500 Navarre Avenue, Oregon, Ohio on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, from 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, February 7, 2013. from 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

On Friday, February 8, 2013, Brian will lie in state from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. at St. Josephs Church, 5373 Main Street, Sylvania, Ohio followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, an expression of sympathy, the family would appreciate any donations directed to The Brian Hoeflinger Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Huntington Bank.

I didn’t personally know you, Brian. Being a father is what made me grieve you. I don’t know your mother or father either, but I know exactly how they feel and how much you are loved. I just know. Peace and love always.

I don't know if you remember me. Brian Sr. And I were friends when he started Med school, at MCO. I was SO sad to hear about your sweet boy. I too am a parent of teens. And do not know how terrible it is to see your son, one day alive then see him again not. My prayers are with you. My husband and I will try to attend one of the functions held in Brian's honor. Dear Hoeflinger Family,
My heart broke hearing the news.. I am so sorry for your loss.. I don't know if you remember me, but I worked in the Pro Shop at the Country Club a few years ago... I remember Brian as this cute little boy with his plaid shorts, polo shirt and fluffy hair. I can still picture him carrying his clubs. He was always so nice and wanted to be a part of the conversation..It was so cute how excited he was to turn in his scores for his handicap. I can't believe how much he has grown up in the past few years.. He was such a great kid.. My thoughts and prayers are with you all! RIP Brian

I just want to express my sincere heartache for the loss of your son. I never knew him. I'm a driving school instructor, and have had many students from OHHS over the years. Your son sounds like he was one of a kind, and I can't get this tragedy out of my mind from the day I heard about it. Thank God that you have a large family that can hold each other up together as you slowly move forward. I train a lot of my students in the village roads of Ottawa Hills, and will always keep your son in my thoughts along with each student. My prayers are with you always.

I'm in northeast PA, but my sister lives in Ottawa Hills. She informed me of your tremendous loss the morning they learned of the tragedy. She sent me a picture of Brian with my niece, Mallory and it has been a constant reminder to whisper your names in prayer throughout my day. I hope you find comfort knowing miles don't separate the compassion and mourning we feel. Community is larger than our zip codes, and you are loved.

I never knew Brian. However, as a former resident of Ottawa Hills, I have had a constant stream of messages, pictures, and statuses describing how amazing he was. I have talked with family and friends, some who knew him and some who did not, and everyone seems affected in some way. I have found myself crying and mourning with the rest of Ottawa Hills the last couple of days, because although I never knew Brian, somehow, I still feel like I lost someone. I am deeply sorry for your loss and I have been praying a lot. But despite the sorrow, I cannot help but notice that this tragedy has ignited a life, an energy, a movement to this village and everyone connected to it. I have never seen anything like it. He really must have been something special. Stay strong and know people are thinking of you, near and far.
