Charles Allen Obituary

Charles D. Allen

Charles D. Allen, transitioned to eternal rest on July 2, 2025, at the age of 96. He was born on May 6, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Guy Madison Allen, and Esther Shoecraft Allen. Charles Allen was united in marriage to Elinor W. Allen, whom he met while attending the University of Toledo, in 1955.

A 1947 graduate of Woodward High School, he excelled in sports playing football, baseball, basketball, and track. Charles briefly attended Kentucky State University on an athletic scholarship before serving his country during the Korean War era, as a member of the United States Army, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant 1st Class in the 2nd Armored Division, being stationed in Germany.

As a grandchild of Alice Gray Shoecraft, one of the earliest pioneering members of Warren AME Church, Charles actively participated in the church during his childhood, adolescence, and adulthood in many capacities when needed, without hesitation. Most recently, he served on the Trustee Board, the Men's choir, and numerous other roles throughout a consistent membership of over 90 years.

Working as a supervisor at Charter One Bank, he still found the time to generously dedicate service to the Toledo community, where he was actively involved in numerous impactful community initiatives, throughout his membership within fraternal organizations. He held a 75-year membership with Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity, Inc.

In 1958, he began a life of committed service to Prince Hall Masonry, working happily and tirelessly over the years, holding numerous esteemed titles. In recognition of his significant goodwill and dedication, the honor of 33rd Degree Freemasonry was conferred upon him by the Supreme Council, in 1987.

Charles, fondly known as "Chuck Allen," is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elinor W. Allen; daughter, Dr. Charlla Allen; son, Gary T. Allen; granddaughter, Allyssa Harris; grandson-in-love, Camren Harris; great-grandchildren, Charleigh and Aiden Harris; brother, Joseph Allen; as well as his beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and other loved ones.

Chuck's dedication to duty, honor, and service left an incredible mark on all our hearts that we will always cherish. He touched the lives of many with kindness, courage, and unwavering commitment. His memory will be shared through stories of his determination, his quiet support, and laughter, forever.

All services will be held at Warren AME Church, 915 Collingwood Ave., Toledo, OH, on July 13, 2025, at 5:00 p.m., July 14, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., with the Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements provided by services the House of Day Funeral Home.
