Charles Atkins Obituary

Charles Henry Atkins, Jr.

Charles Henry Atkins, Jr. died peacefully surrounded by loved ones at Northwest Ohio Hospice on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. Born in Toledo, Ohio on June 20, 1941, to Charles Henry (Bud) Atkins and Thelma Lena (Sally) Stambaugh Atkins. He attended Harvard Elementary School and Libby High School and graduated with a master's degree in School Administration and master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Toledo.

His career in education began at Glenwood Junior High School teaching math and science. Years following were spent at Sylvania McCord Junior High School, Counselor; Sylvania Northview and Sylvania Southview Vocational Counselor; Sylvania schools (7-12), administrative intern; Sylvania Northview High School, Assistant Principal; Sylvania McCord Jr. High School, Assistant Principal; Sylvania Southview High School Assistant Principal; Sylvania McCord Jr High School, Principal; Anthony Wayne Local Schools, Assistant Superintendent and Pike-Delta-York, Superintendent of Schools. These assignments total 37 years in education.

After retirement in 2001, he served in interim positions as a mentor for the high school principal of Ottawa Hills Schools, Interim Superintendent for North Central Local Schools, and Interim Superintendent for Sylvania City Schools. These years in the educational field were enjoyable, working with supportive staff and highly interesting students.

Chuck was an active member of Saint Paul's Lutheran Church Toledo and held many positions, including the President of the congregation for eight years. He enjoyed his membership and years of sailing at the Monroe Boat Club, friendships he developed through Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity which he joined during his undergraduate years at the University of Toledo, fishing whenever possible, especially in the Maumee River for walleye and playing tennis with his brothers for many years in various tennis clubs. His greatest love of all was spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his spouse Nancy Lee Gluss Atkins, whom he met during his freshman year at the University of Toledo and married in 1964. Also surviving are son, Timothy Charles Atkins (Jennifer) Chicago, Illinois; and daughter, Jill Kristin Atkins Sefcik (Robert) St. Augustine, Florida. Grandchildren, Madeline Lee Sefcik, Andrew Stuart Atkins, Peter Charles Atkins, Morgan August Richard Sefcik, Frances Jane Sefcik, and Charlotte Rose Sefcik. Brothers, Fred Atkins (Marcia), Thomas Atkins (Joyce) and Jeffery Atkins (Patty); several nieces and nephews, and Peter, Madonna, Elouera, Tenayah, Xanthe and Keeley Bowmer.

A private burial will be held prior to the service at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Toledo at 1:30 p.m. where family and friends are invited to gather at 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service.

The family expresses gratitude to the staff of ProMedica Home Health and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their compassionate care. Memorials in Chuck's honor may be given to Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, Toledo and Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
