I got my first violin from Mr. Holmes back in 1997. He was always so unique in the way he spoke , and so knowledgeable about everything . I´m now almost 40 and I will always remember him and the way he impacted me . I stuck with violin up until I had my third child in my 30s.

while in the band, Mr Holmes wanted me to learn how to play an alto clarinet which he supplied. i did learn to play it and i got to go to the Monroe County Honor Band concert because of that. i was going thru some things the other day and came across my pin and certificate that i got for playing in the honor band. i still have them. i thought of Mr Holmes and his faith in me for learning a new instrument. it was truly an honor. RIP Mr Holmes, you are not forgotten. diana saylor (Van Kleeck) class of 1967 Bedford High School

My dad, Terry Miller, (class of 1958) was a BHS drum major under Mr. Holmes. He often talked of him and had great memories of his band years. I, (class of 1978) and my brother and sister went on to play an instrument and enjoy band. Now our children are participating in band too. Mr. Holmes inspired generations to love music!

I bought my first flute from Mr. Holmes, and he gave me a few lessons on how to play it. My sisters both bought their clarinets from him also.I still have my flute and will forever be grateful to Mr. Holmes and his kind ways with helping a 5th grader learn how to play. God bless him and his family, and may he rest in peace.

Mr. Holmes was an amazing teacher. I not only had him for band when I first started playing, but also later on as a math teacher and for home room. He had a legacy not many can hold a candle to. As my family grew and my childern decided to also be involved in band/orchestra, we also returned to Holmes Music in which to rent/buy their instruments. He will definately be missed. My condolances to the entire Holmes family.

Debbie and Family,
Mr. Holmes was our Mr. Holland. No one could ever forget his laughter or his love for music. Both my children played trombone in school and we always rented from Mr. Holmes. He made them respect their instruments and with that came responsibility. We have had a fabulous music program at Bedford always, but Charlie Holmes made that happen. He touched many lives with music and his legacy will live on. Much sympathy to you and your family.
Forever in our hearts.

Mr. Holmes was an tremendous inspiration in my life. First, he taught me how to play the clarinet in fifth grade and his patient musical instruction continued through high school. I had the good fortune of receiving his guidance as a BHS drum major and watching him assemble complicated but exciting half-time performances. He was a true genius in doing this. As a result of Mr. Holmes' inspriation, I continued to play the clarinet and other musical instruments through college and beyond. I have played in community bands and orchestras in nearly every place that I've lived. While performing with these groups I have thought often about Mr. Holmes and wondered how many others have been inspired by him to make music part of their daily lives. Mr. Holmes started all of this and I am truly grateful each day that he did. He will be greatly missed. With deepest sympathy to his family.

I will never forget the many, many trips to Holmes Music purchasing reeds for my saxophone, or to have him repair it. Mr. Holmes was a constant in my musical life. Mr. Holmes was also my music teacher for a short time. He certainly had a zest for life and his laugh was something I'll never forget! Being in band was the some of the best years of my life and I always knew I could count on Mr. Holmes to be there to sell me a reed, fix my sax, or give words of encouragement. He will be missed.

As far as Iam concerned, Mr. Holmes was one of the great teachers of all time. Most of us really loved him, but of coarse would not have admitted it back then. He was one of best!!!! Phil Leininger 1967

I was in the first marching band that Mr. Holmes directed the first year he was at Bedford. He was a great director and all around friend..When years later my kids were in band, it was Mr. Holmes I could always go to at Holmes Music to get their instruments, repairs etc. It was always a great time when I would stop in the store..he liked telling "remember when" stories..lots of reminiscing and lots of laughing..He will be missed!!
Prayers and love to you Connie and the whole family.

As a member of the class of '72, and a classmate of Debbie's, I believe that, as sophomores, we were honored to be part of Charlie's last BHS band. I've thought of that year many times since then, and my most vivid memories are of his laughter and his dedication. These memories will continue to make me smile in the years ahead. My heartfelt condolences to the entire Holmes family.

I have many fond memories of my years in band. Charlie knew how to work the instruments to his advantage. I started out playing the flute and my brother Chris the trombone. When Chris started playing football and left band, Charlie said to me at the beginning of marching band season,"Don't you have a trombone at your house that isn't being used?" He certainly wanted some more brass instruments for the marching band. That began my years of playing the trombone and bass trombone. Later when my daughter signed up for fifth grade band, Charlie's store was where we bought her first clarinet. Condolences to the entire Holmes family on the loss of such an important member of your family.

Band gave me a reason to want to go to school and a family away from home, and Mr. Holmes made that happen. He instilled in us a "can do" attitude and truly wanted all of us to succeed. We were very fortunate to have him as a teacher, a role model, and a friend, when needed.

To Connie Holmes and Family,
God Bless you all in this special time. Remembering back to when I had the priviledge of working for the music store, calling on band directors and selling musical instruments. Out of all my years of jobs I think I enjoyed that one the best. Traveling around in the blue Ford Van doing Public relations, adding many schools to service.... Enjoyed working with him along with Debbie and Rob... Those were special days I won't ever forget... As much as we miss him we know he's in the arms of God now and probably visiting with David Tolly. Bless your hearts we love and miss you all.

Dear Holmes Family members,
When I think of Charlie Holmes, I can recall that jovial little chuckle of his that punctuated his relating some incident or event he found humorous (and Charlie could find the humor in just about anything). I've never known anyone else that was more effervescent - more generally upbeat - than he was.
In Junior high I'd been struggling with the clarinet when one day, Mr. Holmes brought a huge black case into the music room. Without saying much about it, he extracted a huge, shiny tuba from within and invited me to try it. It was a pivotal moment for me. I took to that horn like a fish to water. And I'm convinced to this day that Charlie KNEW that I and that horn were meant to be.
I think it's safe to say that we band students got A LOT more "learnin'" than just how to march and play our instruments. And when I stop to think about it, he imbued us with these "lessons" without ever labeling them as such. Most teachers would be envious of that ability.
Teacher, or just a great example (role model). I don't think one could ably seperate them in Charlie Holmes' case. I know I owe my appreciation of a wide array of music genres to Mr. Holmes. I'm sure there's more subtle facets of my being that bear the mark of his influence. May he rest easy here while continuing to make music in some literally star-studded ballroom in the sky.

I was a Bedford band member in elementary school though senior year. Looking back I realize how much I learned from a dedicated inspirational man who made the BHS Band one of championship caliber when we marched out on to the football field and in other events where we peformed. I cherish those years in the friendships I made, and still have, under the kind eye of Charles Holmes. He will be missed by all who knew him. May his family be comforted in the knowing that he was loved and appreciated by his many students.

My deepest sympathy to the Holmes family in the loss of Mr. Holmes. His was a life well lived. Dedicated to making music and instilling the love of music in thousands of people. He helped inspire me to become a music educator and a musician. The average educator today spends 4.5 years in the profession. His dedication of 30 years spoke volumes of the care he had for his students. He was a great inspiration to all of us.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said that its better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. Mr. Holmes' legacy has left us with a virtual bonfire blaze of inspiration and memories. We loved him and all that he gave of himself so that we would become better persons, not just musicians. His spirit continues to fill our hearts. Thank you Connie and your children for allowing us to share his talents, his kindness and his understanding. Your sacrifice over the years made so many of us better people. Our love and prayers go out to you. It's not only a time to mourn but to celebrate a life lived well.

My prayers and thoughts are with your family. Mr. Holmes was such a wonderful part of my life - from sixth grade through high school. We had such fun in the band and he always challenged us to do more. I started out playing the clarinet, but I ended up playing several other instruments, as well. I will never forget the halftimes of the Detroit Lions games (especially the one that rained and we did pre-game in the mud), the trips to Boblo and Cedar point, etc. He was such a dedicated and remarkable man! Thank you, Mr. Holmes!

Dear Holmes Family,
I remember Mr. Holmes very fondly for his many kindnesses and patience with teenage shenanigans. The outings to Memorial Day and July 4th parades, to Cedar Point and Bob Lo provided me with a lot of fun in a dreary time. He was a good and kind person and I was fortunate to have him as a teacher. I am sorry for your loss and hope the number of people who will remember him as long as they live provides some measure of consolation to you.

My deepest and heartfelt sympathy to the Holmes family.
I always marveled at his kindness and patience, especially when he was trying to teach a room full of 5th graders how to play a variety of instruments. In high school the marching band formations were a challenge, too. The love of music that started in those years was passed on to my daughter who played clarinet in band for six years.
Wishing the family comfort and peace at this difficult time.

Many of us had Mr. Charlie Holmes for 8 years in band. We were the 1st group that he started at the 5th grade level (Class of '64). I will always remember his broad smile, his unique chuckle and his knidness and understanding. I still say "Good Morning" ...when greeting people, even though it might be 4 in the afternoon. He always felt that morning was the freshest, purest, and most positive part of the day. He was one of the most positive influences on so many of our lives. We loved him and we honor him......we cherish all that he gave to so many of us.....and how much that his wife and family gave and sacrificed in order for him to be part of our lives. Our prayers and sympathies go out to his wife, his family and his many, many friends. We will continue to hold him dear to our hearts. Farewell beloved mentor.
