Daniel Hanson. Obituary

Dr. Daniel J. Hanson. M.D.

Dr. Daniel J. Hanson was born in 1928 in Faribault, MN. His parents were Dr. Joseph and Lucille Hanson. Daniel enlisted in the US Navy V-5 program for flight training while a senior at Faribault High School. After discharge, he attended the University of Minnesota where he earned his undergraduate and Doctor of Medicine degrees. Dan was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha, national honor societies. He served his internship at Mercy Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. He was called back to service as a physician during the Korean War and was discharged in 1956. Dan then served a residency in Pathology at Mercy Hospital and at Charity Hospital in New Orleans.

Dr. Hanson joined the medical staff at Mercy Hospital in 1961 and became the Chairman of Pathology and Director of the Residency Program in 1965. He also served on the medical staffs of St. Charles, St. Vincent and St. Luke's Hospitals. Dr. Hanson was Clinical Professor of Pathology Emeritus at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Adjunct Professor at UT College of Pharmacy. He was also President and Medical Director of Pathology Laboratories where he practiced until retirement in 2005.

Dr. Hanson was a member of several professional societies including the Academy of Medicine of Toledo, the Ohio Society of Pathologists – in which he served as President, the College of American Pathologists – in which he served as a member of the Board of Governors and the board of its Foundation, the American Pathology Foundation, serving on the Board of Directors and as President, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

He authored numerous papers published in medical journals and made presentations at scientific meetings nationally and abroad.

Dr. Hanson and his wife, Mary Jo, enjoyed extensive travel in the U.S. and internationally especially with friends and relatives. They spent the winter months of several years in Jacksonville, Florida. They enjoyed (for the most part) playing golf and were members of the Inverness Club in Toledo and the Queen's Harbour Club in Jacksonville, FL.

Dr. Hanson loved to watch sporting events and was an avid supporter of the UT Rockets. He was a member of the Downtown Coaches Association and received the "12th Man" Award from the University in 2004. His other favorite teams were the Green Bay Packers and the Boston Red Sox. Dan truly enjoyed a good joke and told a few himself. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph, Jr., and Thomas Hanson. Survivors are his wife, Mary Jo; sons, Daniel (Yoshie) Hanson, Jr. and Dr. Eric (Nicole) Hanson; grandchildren, Gregory, Matthew, Jacob, Erica and Katie. Also surviving is his former daughter-in-law Jean Hanson.
