Daniel Koechel Obituary

Daniel A. Koechel, Professor Emeritus

Daniel A. Koechel, 81, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2021 at Hospice of NW Ohio. Dan was born on November 16, 1939 in Waseca, Minnesota to Clark M. and Hazel "Pat" (Paffrath) Koechel. He graduated from Waseca Central High School in 1957, and earned a B.S. in Pharmacy in 1962 and a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota in 1969. He married his high school sweetheart, Judy Hackett, on December 16, 1961.

Daniel joined the Medical College of Ohio in 1969 in the department of Pharmacology. His research focused on renal pharmacology and toxicology and was supported by NIH and American Heart Association grants. He truly loved teaching pharmacology to medical and nursing students. He was honored to receive the Robert T. Tidrick Golden Apple award 31 consecutive years by the medical students at MCO for outstanding teaching, from 1976-2007. He authored the diuretics chapter of Wilson and Gisvold's Textbook of Organic Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Upon retirement, his goals were to study the Bible and share his faith, and enjoy his hobbies, his family and time with his 7 grandchildren.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Judy; son, Grant (Chrisanne); and daughter, Molly (Jim) Stevenson; grandchildren, Thaddeus, Emily, Myles and Jackson Koechel, and Paige, Natalie and Lily Stevenson; son-in-law, David Lovett. His brother, Clark J. (Inez) Koechel; his nephews, Mark and Matt; and niece, Jenny; also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Darcy Anne Lovett; and nephew, John Koechel.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Church of the Cross, 1750 Eastgate Rd., Toledo, OH 43614, on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at 2:30 p.m., where the family will begin receiving guests at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be given to the Professor Daniel A. For physician graduates of the Medical College of Ohio, the opportunity to learn pharmacology basics from Daniel A Koechel PhD was a highlight. He won teaching awards annually for good reason. There are thousands of MCO physicians who are better off having had the opportunity to learn from him. I am saddened by his passing at such a young age, but it appears that his expertise was helpful in the very therapy that helped to extend his life. I am fortunate for the opportunity to have been in his classroom. Dr Koechel left a lasting imprint that we can all benefit from.
