As a student of Dr. Cheney from long ago, I still think fondly of his Shakespeare class. Whenever I taught a work of Shakespeare to my English students or the Renaissance period to my history students, I tried to make the era come alive to them as Dr. Cheney did for those of us who laughed along with his jokes.

Dr. Cheney was a professor of mine in the 1970s. He was always so kind and pleasant. So sorry for your loss.

Dave's genial wit made his presence in our lives glow from the day he arrived to join us. Sue and I are so sorry he has left us now, but we carry forward his memory as friend, teacher, and scholar who was an inspiration to his students.

Although we were both member of UT's English Department, I knew David best after his retirement through our chance meetings as I walked to school and he was out walking the dog. We had many delightful conversations and I appreciated his pithy but very witty comments. Through our love of our grandchildren we learned we had a great deal in common. Truly a wonderful man. My sympathy goes out to his family.

Dr. Cheney was my first contact as a new graduate student at UT. Later, I worked with him on collating the letters of Leigh Hunt. When I would meet him in his office, I always knew there was a pun or two just waiting to emerge. I will miss his unique sense of humor.

Dr. Cheney was a great mentor and displayed genuine qualities of kindness and sincerity. He was open to listening to the students, not just sharing his opinions, he will be greatly missed. With deepest sympathy My Condolences to you and your family.

We will miss Dave. He was a gentle voice of reason. (And of course we will also miss his puns.)

David was a person of whom I have always been very fond. Quiet and calm, with a ready smile and quip, he was a pleasure to know. I have missed him since he retired and will continue to do so.
