David Cheney Obituary

CHENEY Dr. David R. David R. Cheney, Ph.D., passed away Sunday, June 18, 2006, at Foundation Park Care Center. David was born in Castle Dale, Utah, in 1922, to Silas and Klara Cheney. He attended Snow College in Ephrain, Utah, from 1939 to 1941. In March of 1941, he joined the National Guard and served in WWII until January of 1946, playing the French Horn in the Army ASF Band. His unit served in New Caledonia, Guadal Canal and the Philippines. He was also company clerk at that same time. Upon honorable discharge, David pursued his education, earning a B.A. and an M.A. from the University of Utah (1946-49), M.A. from Harvard (1949-51) and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa (1951-55). Following his Ph.D. studies, David and his wife, Pat, traveled for a year through Great Britain and Europe on a motor scooter built for two. He returned to teach at Lewis and Clark College, SW Missouri State University and finally The University of Toledo. A professor of literature for over 34 years, David was, for a time, in charge of the Graduate Program in English at the University of Toledo. During this time, he recruited and mentored students in obtaining their M.A. and Ph.D. Degrees. David was a published author and editor. Among his accomplishments were the publications of many Leigh Hunt articles, a poet and essayist of the English Romantic Period. David was a member of the Modern Language Association, Midwest Language Association, Modern Humanities Research Association and the Shakespeare and Milton Societies. He was a Phi Beta Kappa and a Phi Kappa Phi. He was known by his friends and students for his dry sense of humor and his love for puns! David is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter, Pamela (Jason) Angle; grandson, Alaric Toft; sister, KaraLynn Chamberlain; and brother, Vernon (Marsali) Cheney. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Douglas, Bruce and Lowell Cheney. As a student of Dr. Cheney from long ago, I still think fondly of his Shakespeare class. Whenever I taught a work of Shakespeare to my English students or the Renaissance period to my history students, I tried to make the era come alive to them as Dr. Cheney did for those of us who laughed along with his jokes.

Dr. Cheney was a professor of mine in the 1970s. He was always so kind and pleasant. So sorry for your loss.

Our heart-felt condolences. He was fine man.

Dave's genial wit made his presence in our lives glow from the day he arrived to join us. Sue and I are so sorry he has left us now, but we carry forward his memory as friend, teacher, and scholar who was an inspiration to his students.

Although we were both member of UT's English Department, I knew David best after his retirement through our chance meetings as I walked to school and he was out walking the dog. We had many delightful conversations and I appreciated his pithy but very witty comments. Through our love of our grandchildren we learned we had a great deal in common. Truly a wonderful man. My sympathy goes out to his family.

Dr. Cheney was my first contact as a new graduate student at UT. Later, I worked with him on collating the letters of Leigh Hunt. When I would meet him in his office, I always knew there was a pun or two just waiting to emerge. I will miss his unique sense of humor.

Very Fond Student

Dr. Cheney was a great mentor and displayed genuine qualities of kindness and sincerity. He was open to listening to the students, not just sharing his opinions, he will be greatly missed. With deepest sympathy My Condolences to you and your family.

We will miss Dave. He was a gentle voice of reason. (And of course we will also miss his puns.)

David was a person of whom I have always been very fond. Quiet and calm, with a ready smile and quip, he was a pleasure to know. I have missed him since he retired and will continue to do so.
