David Flory Obituary

David B. Flory

November 27, 1958 - October 12, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Flory, 65 years, on Saturday, October 12, 2024, after a long illness and valiant effort in Corvallis, Oregon.

He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, companion and friend. He is already greatly missed. He brought his own huge personality, intelligence, artistry, and sense of humor to all he did, and made our experiences all the more interesting for it. He was diagnosed later in life with Asperger's Autism and dyslexia, and that was a welcome relief, as it explained a lot of the challenges he had to overcome without knowing why he felt different, and that things that came easy to some were harder for him.

He began his life in Toledo, Ohio, and was raised in South Toledo, where he attended Beverly Elementary and Bowsher High School. He graduated from the U.S. Navy Bootcamp, and trained to be on the honor-guard before going on and obtaining his Boiler Technician rating in the Navy, where he was stationed at Seattle, Washington, on the U.S.S. McKean (DD-784). He also graduated from truck driving school, and he worked construction over the years until his condition prevented it. He lived most of his life in the Pacific Northwest, residing in Washington and then Oregon, where he remained in the house by the river in Corvallis (which was his favorite place to be) for many years, until his passing. Much appreciation to his landlord, the late Homer Twedt, and family.

He liked to spend his days listening to talk radio, watching TV, being a fan of the Oregon Beavers, enjoying both the birds at the feeder and the perennial flowers, and, before his lack of mobility prevented it, roaming the shops for unique finds which he would gift to his Posse, and he enjoyed mowing the lawn. He saw and enjoyed life from the comfort of his easy chair by the window.

Special thanks to his companion of the last 24 years, Corey Brown, for her friendship and care at the end of life, and for weathering life's storms with him. He was predeceased by his father, Toledo Blade Photographer, Don Flory; his little brother, Dougie; and many friends. Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Theresa Hoffman; sister Joyce (Kirk) Gilliam; and nephew, Doug Curtis.

Arrangements are through McHenry Funeral Home in Corvallis, Oregon. Services for David will be private at Toledo Memorial Park, Sylvania, Ohio.
