Edward Szymanski Obituary

Edward Ernest Szymanski

Edward Ernest Szymanski, age 63, passed away June 18, 2021, surrounded by his loving family at Ebeid Hospice after a long illness. He was born July 13, 1957, in Toledo to the late Edward and Hazel (Hopkins) Szymanski. Ed graduated from Woodward High School in 1976 and attended the University of Toledo.

He was known for his kind generosity and most days minding his successful jewelry business. Respected throughout the community as an honest businessman, Ed was a licensed diamond broker for 37 years. He grew up in the business helping his father at coin shows where he learned about buying and selling gold. He later joined his brother Paul to operate a jewelry store in Point Place before founding Legends in Time 32 years ago. Ed always liked antique jewelry and was drawn to the wholesale business. In 2006 he decided to expand and opened Estate Jewelers in Sylvania. The business soon outgrew its original building and now resides on Monroe Street. Ed worked as an electrician with Local 8 IBEW prior to his career as a jeweler, stayed connected to the union and the wonderful stories remain. Always kind and funny, he will be forever missed as a husband, father, brother, and friend.

Left to mourn his loss are his wife, Frances "Fran"; son, Myles; daughter, Stephanie Castillo; stepdaughter, JoEllen Cherko; stepson, Scott (Jennifer) Cherko; brother, Paul; and sisters, Judy Pacer, Linda (Larry) Lakatos and Sandy (Jim) Paszczykowski. In addition to his granddaughter Madison Castillo, he leaves four grandchildren and three great grandchildren through marriage, and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his in-laws, Kenneth and Josephine Symington.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) where funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 24, 2021. Burial will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, contributions in Ed's memory be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

He bought a hat horse pin from me for ten dollars and to this day I think of going back again but I will wait for a while, God must have needed him for a purpose. He was a amazing husband,, father and everyone that loved him. He will always be with you in your heart. God Bless All of You.

I am very shock by Edward’s passing. I am beyond heartbroken. I’ve been coming to Estate Jewelers for 15 years. Edward was so sweet and soft spoken. I will miss telling him my stories and bad jokes but, he always laughed. I am so sorry that I didn’t know you were ill. You never told anyone but, that’s the type of man you were. My heart goes out to Myles, Fran, Paul and the rest of your family. Rest In Peace! You will be missed!

"Ernie" and his family lived very close to where we lived on Manhattan Blvd. He was good friends with my son Jim and they could both be found at our house , the Manhattan Marsh behind our houses or the Szymanski house. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time in their lives.

I met Ed in 1987 at Fermi Nuclear we were "toolies". Ed was always level headed, but also with a fun way of accomplishing a task. We never worked; it was an adventure to show up to figure out and perform tasks. He made hard labor a pleasure. He took the lead, I was young in the trade and learned the ways of Electrician humor from him. We always ended our days sweaty, and with hearty "a job well done". That is how he leaves us now. Well done Brother Ed, "a job Well done". Ron Lopez (Meho)

Our sincere condolences to the Szymanski Family. Mr. Szymanski was always so kind and helpful every time we can to Estate Jewelers.
One time, my son and I came in to get a chain for an Irish Celtic cross that we had. Mr. Szymanski was so helpful and extremely kind enough to show my son and I the back of the store where they had all the molds for making different types of pieces of jewelry. He was very knowledgeable and eager to tell us about the business and how it started. We could tell how proud he was of the business and all who were apart of it.
May God grant you all peace and strength during this difficult time!
