Francis Zychowicz Obituary

Francis A. "Frank" Zychowicz

January 23, 1948 - October 1, 2025

Francis A. "Frank" Zychowicz, of Toledo, passed away on October 1, 2025, at the age of 77, amid the loving comfort of family. Frank leaves a lasting impression on those who called him husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, teacher, mentor and friend.

Frank was born on January 23, 1948, to Francis and Theophilia (Kasmierski) Zychowicz. Frank attended St. Adalbert Elementary School, and he graduated from St. Francis deSales High School in 1966. Frank graduated from The University of Toledo with a B.A. of Education in 1969, and a Master of Education in 2000.

Frank married the one love of his life, Jacquelyn "Jackie" Davis, on December 26, 1969, at St. Hedwig Church. Upon earning his education degree, Frank's teaching career began as a science teacher at Whittier Elementary. He later taught in the Wayne-Westland (MI) school system, before returning to Toledo, and serving the last half of his career at Oakdale Elementary, retiring as Assistant Principal, in 2018. In retirement, Frank enjoyed his work as an usher at Huntington Arena, cherishing the wonderful friends he made there.

In addition to his teaching career dedicated to children attaining their best, Frank and Jackie have had a lifelong commitment to a mission of fostering and adoption, helping raise up the lives of many children. When not serving to make young lives better, Frank could be found assisting Jackie at the DaZy Aphasia Centre for stroke and brain trauma survivors. For leisure, Frank enjoyed a round of golf, or spending time in his train room, creating a layout featuring many Polish Village landmarks. Frank also loved sports, rooting for his alma mater, the St. Francis Knights, where he was a member of the 1965 football team that captured the school's first City Championship. As well, he was a devoted fan of the Toledo Walleye, the Toledo Mud Hens, the Detroit Tigers, and the University of Michigan Wolverines.

Frank is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Jackie (Davis) Zychowicz; children, Christine "Tina" (Zychowicz) Bender (Tom), of Goodyear, AZ; Todd Zychowicz, of Toledo; Paul (Juanita) Marinoff, of Fremont; Jason Zychowicz, of Vancouver; Elizabeth (Zychowicz) Furry (Brion), of Parker, CO. Frank was very proud of his nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, with the ninth great-grandchild due in November. Frank is also survived by his sister, Christine (Zychowicz) Carner (Larry). Uncle Frank is remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews.

Frank's Life Celebration will be Thursday, October 9, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m., in Urbanski Funeral Home- a Life Celebration Home, 5055 Secor Rd., Toledo, Ohio. Visitation will continue Friday October 10, from 10:00 a.m., until the Funeral Mass begins at 11:00 a.m., at Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, 2240 Castlewood Dr., Toledo, Ohio 43613. Interment will be held privately, at a later date, in Calvary Cemetery. The family prefers memorials be made in Frank's name to the DaZy Aphasia Centre, Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, or St. Francis de Sales High School.

Yesterday

Frank and I became friends "playing" frosh football at SFS. The pinnacle of our careers was on the varsity as three position players: guard, tackle and end. We sat at the end of the bench, guarded the water bucket and tackled anyone who dared to drink from it. Frank organized for his tolerant big sister, Christine, to give us a ride home from training after her TU classes. It meant that both of them became good friends.
After organizing a date for Frank with Jackie so we could double date for the Senior Prom, I found that our weekend soirees at the Davis household now had a new permanent member - Frank. He fitted right in. It has been marvelous to watch from afar how Frank and Jackie have extended their love for each other and their children to the DaZy Aphasia Centre which helps so many.
While Frank and I might have won the "Golden Splinter Award" for sliding down at the end of the bench, Frank has surely achieved a varsity letter for a life very well and generously lived.
