Frank McClure Obituary

Frank P. McClure

Frank P. McClure Frank McClure peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2016 surrounded by family. He was born October 19, 1926 in Wooster, OH to John and Helen McClure.

Frank was a caring, intelligent, and athletic individual. Throughout his life he played baseball, football (including a year at Purdue), tennis, swimming, a little golf, and wrestling. After leaving Wooster for college, he adapted easily, eventually earning three bachelor's degrees from Purdue University. While at Purdue, Frank served his country as a member of the Naval Reserve. In college he was an NCAA Bridge champion.

When Frank finally started working in his chosen field as a Civil Engineer, he spent his entire professional career working for Jones and Henry in Toledo, with one exception. He was the first superintendent of the new Sandusky Wastewater Treatment Plant for one year when it went online in the early 1960's. He specialized in solving hydraulic issues using a straightforward, logical approach.

He was an avid Bridge player, but refused to teach his children to play. Although he won the NCAA bridge while in college, he didn't want them to lose so much time to a game. He took up tennis in his forties and played into his eighties, quitting only once he started losing sight of the ball in blind spots caused by macular degeneration. He had a productive midlife crisis, both quitting smoking and taking up Windsurfing during his 50's. After giving up tennis, Frank walked everyday and swam seasonally. Frank swam across Stony Lake at YMCA Storer Camps a Conservative estimate of 140 times, swimming another 800 plus miles at YMCA Bowman Pool. At eighty-five years of age, he hiked the shoreline of his beloved Stony Lake.

He practiced his faith at several churches through the years, finding the most strength by participating in men's small group meetings.

In retirement Frank also enjoyed working in his garden which always included broccoli and pole beans.

He supported and cared for all of his children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. He loved attending their performances and events. He was very proud of their many accomplishments.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of sixty-one years, Naomi (Powell) McClure, and his siblings Marilyn Molinaro and John McClure. Surviving are his children, Philip (Bridget) McClure, John (Katie) McClure, Rebecca (Larry) Spencer, Andrew (Lisa) McClure; grandchildren, Sean and Shannon Spencer, Ian, Padraic, Connor, Cale, Tierney, and Natalie McClure; and great-grandchildren, Spencer and Savannah Opsincs.

Visitation will be held at Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St., Maumee on Friday, April 14, 2017 from 3-6 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 6520 Pilliod Rd., Holland OH.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts are directed to YMCA Storer Camps/ McClure Family Endowment Fund sent to 6941 Stony Lake Road, Jackson, MI, 49201.

The family thanks the personnel at the Elizabeth Scott Community and Hospice of NW Ohio for their support, guidance, and care.

My sincere condolences on the passing away of Mr. Frank McClure. When I was a junior at highschool in Germany back in 1984 I spent a couple of weeks with the McClure family as an exchange student. They became my very first American Experience and I even ended up becoming an English teacher. I remember all of the McClures as a very caring family. I found Frank`s obituary by chance on the internet. May he rest in peace.

Frank and I go back over 62 years. He was a favored Bridge partner, and we played in tournaments over Ohio and Michigan. Frank was one of the very few players who enjoyed and could solve "Par" bridge hands - hands prearranged with a complicated solution.

I, like Frank, studied Civil Engineering. Frank had a saying : "To most people it's sewage but to me its my bread and butter".

My wife Paula also liked Frank very much. We both will miss him, though in recent years we were not able to see him and Nikki very often. Rest in peace, Frank.
