Fred Bauer Obituary

BAUER Fred Fred Bauer, one of the country's leading inspirational writers, died September 17, 2009, at home in State College, PA. He and Shirley, his wife of 56 years, made their home in Englewood, FL, and State College. Bauer penned many bestsellers, including biographies with or about such people as artist Norman Rockwell, Senator Everett Dirksen, poet Helen Steiner Rice, and gospel singer George Beverly Shea. His byline appeared in many national magazines, most frequently Guideposts and Reader's Digest. Bauer wrote more than a dozen books, focusing on travel, family and religion. He also created his own publishing company, Littlebrook Publishing, Inc., in Princeton, NJ. Born in Montpelier, Ohio, on March 30, 1934, the son of Jacob W. (Bud) Bauer and the former Juna Hasford, he began his writing career as a sports editor for the local weekly at age 15. He later became an editor for the Bryan Times and Fort Wayne Journal Gazette before being hired by Norman Vincent Peale to serve as managing editor of Guideposts in New York City. The family made their home in Princeton, New Jersey, for over 35 years. He eventually served the magazine as executive editor. It was during this time that he created a devotional book, Daily Guideposts, which he wrote for two years before it became a multi-authored publication. Today, the popular annual is in its 35th year. His trademark was short poems, which were later published in a book. An Army veteran who served as a public information officer during the Korean War, he edited a service publication in Hawaii, and wrote for the Honolulu Star Bulletin and Honolulu Advertiser. It was while he was stationed in Hawaii that he broadcast Major League baseball games over radio, recreating them complete with sound effects. After his two years service stint, he returned to college at Bowling Green State University, where he majored in journalism, graduating in 1957. Following several years of newspapering and sportscasting in Ohio, he went east and joined Guideposts. In 1994, he was awarded BGSU's Distinguished Alumnus Award. He also served on the Bowling Green Alumni board of directors. Bauer was a member of Englewood United Methodist Church in Florida and St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Pennsylvania. He was active in many volunteer activities including the Salvation Army, Hospice, Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity and the Heifer Project. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Laraine Bortner (Jan) of State College, Stephen Bauer (Trina) of State College, Christopher Bauer (Laura) of Santa Monica, CA, and Daniel Bauer of Princeton, NJ; his brother, Robert Bauer (Sherry) of Montpelier, Ohio, his sister, Rev. Joy Bauer-Bulla (Wayne) of Algonquin, IL; grandchildren, Jessica Bortner of NYC, Ashley Bortner of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, David Bortner of State College, plus many nieces and nephews who were all loved very much. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, State College, with the Rev. Joseph Faulkner officiating. A second memorial service will be held in Montpelier, Ohio at a later date. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Fred and Shirley Bauer Scholarship Fund, Mileti Alumni Center, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43404. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College.

My wife and I met Fred on the trail in 1970. He and a college group were hiking the Appellation trail, using two Corsican burrows as pack animals. We were traveling in an Austin Healey on a summer camping trip - looking for a home.

The stories around the camp fire that one night were wonderful and were accompanied by a dinner complete with peach pie - all done by our fellow campers by reflector oven and open fire.

We finally settled in and still live in beautiful Colorado, raising Llamas and other interesting animals.

Fred was fascinating to talk with and I just recently bought his book. It is a delight to think back over 50 years to a time before we settled down and raised a family. We have told this story many times, and shared the fact that life is a real journey.

Looks like I'm another "How Many Hills To Hillsboro?" reader. I discovered this book this summer at the Book Barn in Niantic CT and completed reading it in a few days. I then looked up Fred and discovered this site.
I sincerely hope Laraine, Steve and Chris have fond memories of their adventure. This seems like the 51st year since the epic ride.
My condolences on the 15th anniversary of your Dad's passing.

Dear Bauer family, I have been reading Daily Guideposts since the 80's and always looked forward to reading Fred's thoughts and rhyming prayer at the end. For the last 5 years I have been reading them with my children and they have become "Fred fans" as well. Of course you don't know us, but he seemed a part of our family, too.Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Know that he will be greatly missed. The Moores, Knoxville, TN

Such a coincidence. I've found an old book, How Many Hils to Hillsboro and began reading it in Dec 2009. I became curious about the author and found this obit when I did so. I know it must be such a comfort to find that Mr. Bauer gave so much to the world by his writings. May God bless you and comfort you during this season of your life.

Dear Bauer family,

I found an old book at the "take it or leave it " at the dump in Nantucket, MA a couple of weeks ago. It's titled, "how many hills to hillsboro?" I have been laughing and crying and sighing and dreaming through the entire story and it's been such a joy for me to read and wonder what a trip like that would be like today. I looked you up on the internet only to find out that Fred passed away right around the time I found the book. More amazement. God Bless you one thousand times a thousand times over for your faith now and forever and may he comfort you at this time of loss. Thank you and Fred for living your lives with hearts wide open.

To the Bauer Family,
As a longtime subscriber to Guideposts, I looked forward each year to Mr. Bauer's inspirational writings. I was especially proud that he lived in State College, which is only a short way from my boyhood hometown of Milesburg. He will be missed by more people than you know. My sincere condolences, and God Bless.

Dear Shirley,
My wife Nan and I want you to know that we just read about Fred in the Toledo Blade. What a shock! Why it seems like only yesterday we were in high school. I remember your speech to our graduation class and I was very impressed. I remember seeing you and Fred in Hawaii and hearing about his association with Norman Vincent Peale.
Even though you never knew it I have followed Fred's career and always think fondly of you all and wanted you to know how sorry I am for your loss.
We pray Fred knew Christ as his personal Savior and he is with Him in heaven rejoicing with all his fellow saints.
