Gretchen Lyon Obituary

LYON Gretchen Boyd Gretchen Boyd Lyon passed away peacefully on July 27, 2009, in her home. She was born on January 12, 1912, in Des Moines, Iowa to Mary (Larkin) and Harve Boyd. She was a graduate of Drake University and an active member of Chi Omega Sorority. After graduation, she was employed as an actuarial at a local insurance company. In 1940, she was introduced to a young Army Air Corps officer, Donald W. Lyon, whom she married on May 24, 1941. After World War II, they settled in California until they were transferred to Toledo, Ohio in 1951. She and her husband enjoyed entertaining and were inveterate bridge players. They enjoyed landscaping and gardening. Upon Don's demise, Gretchen enjoyed traveling with her friends making several trips to Europe and to visit friends around the U.S. Gretchen was an active volunteer in the community. She was a museum aide at the Toledo Museum of Art where she and good friend, Dody Condon, established a then groundbreaking program of incorporating live plants in the museum; an active participant on a number of committees of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Maumee; St. Paul's Community Center for which she delivered food; the League of Women Voters; and a den mother for the Girl Scouts, Gretchen was predeceased by her husband of 36 years; as well as brothers, Robert and Harve. She is survived by her three children, Donald W. Lyon (Susan); Virginia L. Fisher; and Janet E. Lyon (James Hill); six grandchildren, Amanda Fisher, Todd Lyon, Jason Fisher, Matt Lyon (Miho), and Sarah and Samantha Lyon-Hill; her sister-in-law, Rosemary Boyd; brother-in-law, Richard C. Lyon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be given to St Paul's Episcopal Church or the Toledo Museum of Art. Gretchen was a great lady. During the time I was her son in law she was a confidant and friend besides being a great mother in law. Will always remember her.
