Harold Sarmento Obituary

Harold Sarmento

06/03/1924 - 10/23/2023

Harold "Hal" Leland Sarmento, 99, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 23, 2023, in Sylvania, Ohio. He was born on June 3, 1924, in Monterey, California, to Joseph and Mary Agnes Sarmento. Hal grew up in Gonzales, California, where he attended high school. Hal graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 1946 with a bachelor's degree of Science and Engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, then went on to achieve his MBA from Stanford University in 1948.

Hal was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine (married in 1952 and died in 1979); and second wife, Marian (married in 1983 and died in 2002).

Hal traveled the country with his family while working for Owens Corning Fiberglas for 29 years beginning in Santa Clara, California, with stops in L.A., Pittsburgh, back to L.A., St. Louis, and Houston, before landing at corporate headquarters in Toledo in 1973. He retired from Owens Corning in 1980 while working in the fabric structures division.

Always the businessman and unable to sit still, Hal opened Moto Photo with his second wife Marian in 1986. After selling Moto Photo, Hal opened two Cold Stone Creamery franchises with his son and daughter in law in 2004, where he was loved and adored by everyone who worked for him. He finally retired from the labor force at the spry age of 95. As Hal was fond of saying "Such is Life!"

In his free time Hal enjoyed golf, bridge, and snow skiing. In his younger days he was always on the sidelines coaching his three sons in all their sports. He would often celebrate their accomplishments more than they would. Hal was truly a sports fan of everything San Francisco until his dying days.

Hal is survived by his three sons, Brett (Jessica), Eric (Laurel), and Mark (Kimberly); his grandchildren, Nathan (Taylor Mikasko), Nicholas (Megan), Bryan, Kaitlyn, Jenna, Samantha (Ryan Yockey), James, and Jacob; and great grandson, Lucas. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Kelly (Chip Rogers), Tim

McKimmy, Pat (Donna) McKimmy, Bridget (Joe Holmes); and nine step grandchildren. Hal is also preceded in death by his stepson, Michael McKimmy.

Visitation will be on Saturday, December 9, at the Reeb Funeral Home from 2-5:00 p.m. in Sylvania, Ohio, with a prayer service at 4:30 p.m. A celebration of life will take place at Sylvania Country Club immediately following the prayer service. The family would like to give a special thank you to Lakes of Sylvania for the outstanding care he received in his last year of life!

Donations can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

I worked with Hal at OCF back in Toledo in the early 80's. We often rode the bus from Sylvania to downtown and back. I'll always remember that Hal never wore an overcoat in winter no matter how cold and miserable it was. He always wore a hat, though and told me that's where you lose the most body heat so he didn't need a coat. A great mentor in my early construction career. I still apply lessons he taught me to this day as I finish my career.
