Howard Haynes Obituary

HAYNES "Coach" Howard (Ham) Howard (Ham) Haynes, eighth child of ten, born to James and Verna Haynes on September 22, 1927 in Toledo, ended the fourth quarter of the game on December 10, 2007, in the same house, neighborhood and community he grew up in. He was a Woodward High School graduate and star football, basketball and track and field athlete. He attended the University of Toledo and fought in the Korean War. A bullet in the leg ended his army career. He also played and traveled with a minor league basketball team, which played against the Harlem Globe Trotters. Howard married high school sweetheart, Lelia O'Neal and is survived by four children, Renee Colette James, Tony Haynes (Jean), Shawna Haynes Easterly (Tony), and Harley Haynes (Ruth). Coach Haynes worked at Doehler-Jarvis factory and retired from the US Post Office. His passion and love was sports, evident in his coaching career, which included basketball, football, baseball, tennis, bowling, wrestling and track and field. Haynes started an "After School Program" for neighborhood kids, before anyone heard of them, using mentors and volunteers from the community, providing guidance and fun activities. He fought to make sure there was a community center in the neighborhood and waged his own personal war on crime, boredom, laziness, disrespect and litter. He instilled a strong work ethic and taught kids the satisfaction of achieving long-term goals. Howard leaves behind one sister, Dorothy Bell; his 4 children; 14 grandchildren; 6 great-grand-children and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation Tuesday 3-6 p.m. followed by Wake from 6-8 p.m., Dale - Riggs Funeral Home Chapel, Funeral, Wednesday 11 a.m. at Spring Street Baptist Church, Elder Hilton Haynes officiate, eulogists Rev. Tony Easterly, interment Forest Cemetery. www.dalefh.com

To my dear mother, sisters and cousins,

We were very fournuate to have been related to, fussed at,chased by the belt, hugged, mentored and loved by one of the most influencial man of our lifetime. I am so sorry I can't make it there to be with everyone I'm sure you know by now. What the "HAM" taught me was to care for the youth and do as much good as you can for people. I,we,Toledo... the whole world will miss him.

Love you all
