James Heidelberg Obituary

HEIDELBERG

James E. Jr.

James E. Heidelberg, Jr., age 64, died suddenly and unexpectedly on January 5, 2013. He was born on March 11, 1948, to his parents, James E. Heidelberg, Sr. and Mary June (Murray) Heidelberg. Jim was a lifelong resident of Toledo and graduated in 1966 from Woodward High School where he held many leadership positions and lettered in football and tennis. He was selected for All-City recognition in tennis.

He attended the University of Toledo where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and enjoyed participation in all-fraternity intramural sports. He served in the Army National Guard's Military Police Unit during the Vietnam era.

Jim was a gifted artist and studied under LeMaxie Glover at Woodward. He was also gifted musically and loved to play the guitar and sing with friends and family. He was self-taught in playing the guitar, as he was when he undertook furniture woodworking. He loved sailing and working on his sailboat, "Boom Boom", with boat partner, Jim Bode. Fishing at Blind Pass on Sanibel Island, Florida was a favorite pastime during his annual vacations with his family. He had plans to move to Florida to enjoy his hobby full-time.

He retired in 2009 after a thirty-seven year career as a Journeyman Electrical Mechanic at Toledo Edison and had many long time friends from his Edison days. Jim was known for his friendship and humor. He loved to welcome friends and family to enjoy his special culinary dishes that he enjoyed refining to perfection.

He was most proud of and dearly loved his two sons, James Victor (Julie) of Tampa, Florida and Scott Jeremy of Columbus, Ohio, and granddaughters, Emma Kay and Kathryn Marie.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Heidelberg; sister Toni Gerber (Kenneth); his ex-wife, Cathleen; and nieces and nephew, Craig, Kristy, Sarah and Melissa.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Woodward High School Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund.

I haven't had the pleasure of Uncle Jim's company in years, but I hold many fond memories of him from my childhood. Wish I could be there with everyone to share in celebrating his life and mourning his passing.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time, especially Jimmy, Scott and Cathy. I wish I could be with you, however, I am out of town. I have so many memories of Jim from Woodward and UT and the many classes we shared together. Jim was so very bright and comical and could always make you smile with his wry sense of humor. Jim, I hope you may at last find your peace.
With sympathy and love,
Sue (Janick) Zdawczyk

My thoughts and prayers are also with your family at this time. I have many memories of Jim during our Alpha Sig days and the National Guard. He was very comical and entertaining and the "curly black beard" was how I will always remember him.
In sympathy,
Gary Zdawczyk

Berg, lost contact with you a bit after college and the National Guard but you will never be forgotten. I'm thinking they play football and tennis up there also. Parties, though, might not be as fun. Rest in peace brother Jim.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the extended Heidelberg family for the loss of a fine man. It seems like yesterday when we were sitting in the lunch room at old Woodward High School, pondering the fate of bologna sandwiches left in our lockers. Later, when we were in the same fraternity at the University of Toledo we enjoyed road trips. I enjoyed the wry humor that Jim exhibited and his caring for the well-being of others. Although our paths have not crossed for almost forty years, Jim is held in high esteem in my eyes.
