James V. Shindler Jr.
James V. Shindler Jr., 85, of Sylvania, OH, died on February 25, 2025, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. He was born and raised in Defiance, OH, to James V. Shindler Sr. and Mary (Beck) Shindler but spent most of his adult life in Toledo, OH. Jim married Rita Rose Gross on April 11, 1964, and together they raised four kids. Rita preceded him in death on December 1, 2024.
Jim attended Ohio University and was a graduate of Ohio State University with a BSBA in Accounting and a degree of Juris Doctor from the University of Toledo Law School. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity and the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.
He was an Assistant Professor of Accounting, Bowling Green State University in 1966 and 1967; Instructor, University of Toledo, Division of Adult and Continuing Education 1965-1967, and a Lecturer in Taxation, Ohio Legal Center Institute from 1976 – 1990.
He worked as an Internal Revenue Agent from 1961-1966; was an Internal Revenue Service District Conferee in 1966 and an Attorney for Shindler Neff LLP, formerly Boxell, Bebout, Torbet & Potter, from 1966 to present.
He was a life member of The Federal Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference, 1999 to present; Board of Trustees, Toledo Catholic Charities, 1970 - 1982; Board of Directors, the Joseph J. and Marie P. Schedel Foundation and Arboretum and Gardens, 1984 to present; President of the Joseph J. and Marie P. Schedel Foundation and Gardens, 2003 - 2018, Board Chair Person, Joseph J. Schedel Foundation and Gardens, 2018 - present; Trustee, Sophia Counseling Center, 2003 - 2022, Board Chair Person, Sophia Counseling Center, 2004 - 2017; Member, Ohio Education Facility Commission, 2008 - 2023.
Jim was a member of the Toledo Bar Association – Member Taxation Committee 1973-1980; Specialization and Advertising Committee, Secretary 1975 and 1976; Internal Revenue Service Liaison Committee 1977; Ohio State Bar Association, Lucas County Bar Association, Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants, Toledo Estate Planning Council; American Academy of Attorney CPA's 1998-2021.
Jim is survived by his children, Melinda (Edward) Wagner, Jim (Caroline) Shindler, Christine (Ernesto) Alessio, and Angela (Bill) Flynn; grandchildren, Nick (Sami) Wagner, Jake Wagner, Thomas (Callie) Shindler, Alexis (Joe) Malone, and Anna Shindler, Danilo, Ava and Andino Alessio, Valerie and Ryan Flynn; great-grandson, Jack Shindler; brother, Mike (Ruth) Shindler; sister, Susan (Larry) Connor; sister, Sarah (Denny) Miller.
The family would like to give special thanks to all the many members of the Shindler Neff Law firm, and especially Mary and Bill Werynski.
Jim was a friend to many and was known for his great sense of humor. He was best known for his caring, compassionate, and giving personality, and his willingness to help anyone. He had a strong sense of fairness and work ethic with the simplest truth that hard work was the most honest way to earn a living, and he continued to work his whole life. He loved to fish and was always happy to be out on a lake with friends, was a lifelong collector of antiques, and an avid sports fan, especially The Ohio State Buckeyes.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025, from 3:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 Main St., Sylvania, OH 43560. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5373 Main St., Sylvania, OH. Entombment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.
The family would also like to thank the staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the Sophia Counseling Center.
