Janice Labine Obituary

Janice Ann (Dunlap) Labine

4/20/1935 - 6/18/2022

Janice "Jan" LaBine, of Bowling Green, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, June 18, 2022. Her husband of 65 years, Leonard 'Bud' LaBine, was at her bedside when she passed.

Born on April 20, 1935, in Toledo, OH, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Esther (Schwieterman) Dunlap.

Jan was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Toledo and went on to earn her Bachelor of Education (Art and History) degree from the University of Toledo, where she was a member of the Tri-Delta Sorority and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Her grade school years were spent at Gesu School, where she met lifelong friends with whom she connected throughout her lifetime. She often spoke of her summer after college, working as the cook at the lodge on Mount Assiniboine in the Canadian Rockies, which was quite a feat given that she didn't know how to cook when she accepted the job! Jan's degree in the Arts fueled a lifetime of involvement in fine arts, including: teaching art, serving as a docent at the Toledo Museum of Art, continuing her study and practice of pottery, drawing and painting throughout her life, and instilling art appreciation (and fun art projects!) in her children. Never was a museum tour so interesting, as one spent with Jan LaBine. Her volunteer efforts were not limited to the arts, as she also worked at the Toledo Zoo as a docent for several years. Her other loves were travel and touching people around the world, as she did with hosting multiple foreign exchange students through Youth for Understanding, where she also served as Regional Director. The bonds created through and with those students continue to this day, with regular exchanges and visits with former students and their families. The world is left a better place because of Jan LaBine.

Jan is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Leonard 'Bud' LaBine; her four children and their spouses, Michelle and husband, Steve Studebaker, Bill and wife, Susan Scott, John and wife, Lisa Sebastian, and Brian and his wife, Barbara Newman. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, Kelly (husband, Tony Geraci), Elizabeth (husband, Adam Kohler), Robert (wife, Lindsey Pecce), Annie, Kathryn, David, Claire, Benjamin, Allison and Gregory; along with 2 great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Jordan.

In addition to her parents, Jan was preceded in death by her brother, Robert; sister, Kay; and infant son, Charles Nicholas.

A viewing and mass of Christian burial were held on June 21st and June 22nd, respectively.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to either Hospice of Northwest Ohio (https://www.hospicenwo.org/forms/donate-online-today/), or St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Maumee. Online condolences may be shared at walkerfuneralhomes.com.

Dear Bud and family.
I was so sad to hear my dearest Mom have passed away.
I was an exchange student in 1981/82 and Janice Labine was my YFU counselor but became my Mom and I have spent a lot of time at her lovely house. Just before corona I visited her and Bud every year and I am so pleased, that I have spent time with her in her old days too. I skyped with Mom and Bud 1 1/2 month ago on my trip to Norway, I wanted to show that I was on the same trip "Norway in a nutshell" that we did together in about 1988 and I wanted to say how great it was to be with her and Bud on that trip but also I am back and so many great memories. When we ended our talk on Skype she sent me the most touching goodbye kiss with her hand and a smile too - I will always love my Mom and she will always be in my heart - she never made me feel wrong - she was the most including person and loving person. Yesterday it was my birthday and I will never receive a card from my Mom again but she have taught me how great it is to be thought of and I will continue to do what Mom have taught me. Actually every day I am thinking of my Mom because I can not eat a meal with out a salad, and thanks to Mom to find out how much I love to eat fresh greens. I am so thankful to my Mom of my whole heart. I was so pleased I could join the mass in Denmark on YouTube even though I would have loved to be there, and I know she knows I will be crying and so I did, but she always could contain also when I was sad. My family send their deepest sympathy also my parents.
Mom came to visit me in Denmark and then Bud came along and also the rest of the family and I am so pleased and happy to have contact with the rest of the family, thank you for Mom.
Lots of love

We have so many wonderful memories of being with Jan (and Bud) whether in Ohio or in NC. One of my favorites is her preparing a dish of "steamed Pot holder" - a true delicacy!!

Dear Bud and family
The world has lost a lady with a heart of gold. I couldn't agree more with Jarmo's striking words below, I was an exchange student (1980-81) and had Jan as a regional director. She/ your family welcomed us as exchange students with open arms, happy get-togethers and not to be forgotten... nice food. A perfect way to build bridges between cultures from all parts of the globe. Nothing but fond memories and feelings - she will surely be missed but has left a mark on all of us for the better.
Wishing you lots of love from The Netherlands.
Thank you Janice!

I´m happy and proud to have had the chance to be the first exchange student in the wonderful LaBine Family in 1975-76. I had the best of luck of having Jan as my American Mother, as my Mom. And ever since, till this day, more Mom, than Jan. I never really grew comfortable with calling Mom Jan instead of Mom. Many came after me and shared my luck of landing with The LaBines, with Mom. And I, with pride, take the liberty of speaking on behalf of all of us exchange students, who became Mom´s boys and girls, her "annexed" sons and daughters. We were...no, we are lucky. And we know, that the world is not itself without our American Mom. She contributed so much to what she, among other things, held important: peace and understanding between people from different parts of the world. A Lady with a big heart full of Love.

Thank You so much for Your Love, Mom!
