Jean MASON Obituary

MASON Jean Elizabeth Garinger Jean Mason 93 Toledo, Ohio passed away March 20, 2012, in Lutheran Village at Wolf Creek. She was born August 14, 1918 to Lawrence and Alpha Zoe (Sorrell) Garinger of Washington Court House, Ohio. She grew up in Bloomingburg, Ohio and graduated from Bloomingburg High School. She graduated from Lillian Johnson Beauty Academy, Columbus, Ohio. Jean worked as a beautician in Mt. Sterling, Ohio until she married Willis Mason on January 11, 1945 and they moved to Tyler Texas during WWII. After the war they returned to Mt. Sterling. Jean and Willis moved Findlay, Ohio and eventually to Toledo, Ohio. Jean was very active in Mothers Club and PTA while her children were in school. After raising two children she returned to work as Manager of the Beauty shop at LaSalle's and then Macys retiring in 1983. During her retirement she and Willis spent winters in Florida. Jean was a member of The Order of Eastern Stars, Mt. Sterling, Ohio. She was in Dendarrah Ladies Shrine. Jean was a devoted Christian and a member of Zion United Methodist Church, where she served on many committees and taught Sunday school. She was a member of the church ladies craft club. They knitted hats for needy children in Toledo. Her family was most important to her. She loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and finally a great grandmother. She enjoyed cooking dinners and having birthday parties at her home. She always said "your birthday was your special day alone." Jean was the best babysitter a sick grandchild could have. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Michelle Mason; her parents; her brother, (Keith Garinger and her husband. Surviving are her son, Gary (Margaret) Mason, and daughter Melanie Shoop; grandchildren, Joshua, Brandon and Melissa Shoop, Jonathan (Laura), Michael (Elizabeth), Kristyn and Anthony Mason; great-grandchildren, Lily Shoop and Ewan Mason. Friends may call at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave. on Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 2 to 8 p.m. with Eastern Star services at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Zion United Methodist Church, 2600 Copland Blvd., Toledo. Interment will be on Saturday, March 24th in Bloomingburg Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. The family request memorials in Jean's name be given to Odyssey Hospice or Zion United Methodist Church. walterfuneralhome.com

My sympathy to your family on the loss of your mom and grandma. As a teacher I knew few grandparents as well as I did Mrs. Mason. She was always so sweet when we needed her assistance. I remember seeing her out shopping as well. Melanie, Josh, Brandon, and Melissa, I know this must be very hard on you as I know you were close. My thoughts are with you.
